But a lay battlemage is going to use their wand for a lot of purposes, not only and not solely in combat with adversaries running half plate mithril armor. And when he's not (and with the amount of training a layman will realistically have) it's the ability to put a sheer volume of spells in the general direction of their foe that's going to matter.
Hell, with the amount and type of mana this "ol' reliable" is going to need, I doubt he'll be able to afford training to even an apprentice level. Have you seen the prices on red mana potions? It was bad enough during the Black Death, and it's still shit.
