I just bought a 10 pack of US humanitarian daily rations for a little over $30, which seems cheap as hell for MRE-type meals. They seem suitable enough for camping and emergency situations. Has anyone tried them? Am I gonna be suffering through these when I take them in the woods?

They're one of the only food items I've ever had where I didn't hate them at first, but got incredibly tired of them within days. Just seeing one makes my appetite disappear even today.

And that's impressive given that there's nothing in there that's offensive or tastes *bad*.

The best stuff in terms of taste will always be the civilian camping food, because it doesn't need to meet as long of shelf life requirements and isn't intended to be dropped out of airplanes on huge pallets.

i bought a case last year to try because they were so cheap and they are meh. the cookies and poptarts taste fine and the crackers with peanut butter and strawberry are legit but the mains are all around meh. zero flavor and bland taste, you really have to add the entire salt and pepper packet in it just to taste anything and i'd recommend bringing whatever particular brand of hot sauce with you. if youre hungry then its fine but i'd def bring some real food and alternate between the two because if i had to eat that shit 3 days in a row it wouldnt be very fun

tl;dr
its all carbs and zero protein in these things (minus the peanut butter) so expect to get hungry again soon if doing strenuous activity and I wouldnt buy it again

>>63849502
this would be the smarter buy as of now because they are surprisingly cheap BUT 1 HDR is 2 meals vs 1 MRE being just one so technically if you want max food/cheap the HDR is better value but the mains sucks. MRE has "better" mains plus a heater

The prototype HDRs (which were on Sportsmans Guide a couple years back) were terrible, almost no protein, menus that made no sense, but these are supposed to be OK. Seriously, one of the prototype meals was spanish rice and cheesy potatoes with tortillas and sunflower butter.

Nothing wrong with any of the ingredients, but just no thought given to whatever combination of items was Kosher, Halal, Vegitarian, hypoallergenic, and 2700 calories, just whatever shit they had extra of.

I lived on these for a while. I got a couple of cases of Sopakco, and then a couple cases of Wornick. The Sopakco were actually pretty tasty, no complaints at all. Wornick is fucking disgusting and the reason why I stopped buying them, the price isn't as compelling if you buy from places that handpick the cases by brand and buying random isn't worth the risk of paying $30 for a case of inedible garbage. I never got an Ameriqual so I can't comment on them, but from what I've seen they look edible but with a more limited menu than Sopakco.

if you're at all serious about it, you'd store tinned food, rice and beans; and eat them regularly on a first in first out basis. this accustoms you to the food, and avoids waste. it's an Amish or Quaker practice, I think

this was a great example that was probably missed by most viewers:

Indeed. Ideally get some with an inspection date in the future, but those tend to be more expensive.

Check for the TTI sticker; if the inner circle is darker than the outer circle it wasn't stored well.

With HDR, consider supplementing with spam, tuna, or even a bag of beef jerky.

The best things as emergency food is freeze dried or nitrogen preserved buckets you can buy and forget about. Get the ones with 20-25+ year shelf lives. In 25 years you can buy more and think about eating the old ones, let them sit as plan b extras, or throw them out after they have served their purpose of insuring you against hunger. If you don't have a budget for that standard shelf stable food you can buy an abundance of and eat on a first in last out basis is ideal.
If you get mres or other things you earmark as emergency food they generally aren't cost effective and you have to be aware of expiration dates, add to that when those start to roll around you may not want to eat life boat rations/ spam/tuna packs

I bought a case a few months ago for shits and giggles. The menus are bland but palatable, mostly beans and rice. The sides are also fine, the peanut butter ends being the tastiest thing in the pack but it's not like anything is inedible either. The beans and simple menus make them easily digestible, if these things are backing you up then it's your fault, not the HDR's. Bare in mind that these are supposed to be the bare minimum to keep one person alive for one day who's not moving around much, so they're not packed with energy the same way an MRE is. If your intent is to keep these as emergency rations then you'd really want to supplement with a salted meat of your choice, multivitamin, and drink mix to make it a little more well rounded. Maybe some aftermarket FRH's as well since these have no heaters.

tl;dr they're okay, just buy them when they're cheap

>>63852766
They're fine if you intend to use them within a few years of purchase, any longer than that and you're better off just buying a bucket of freeze dried food, hoarding canned goods, or storing beans and rice. Properly stored freeze dried food can easily last decades, MRE's simply can't.

>I just donโ€™t get his point of hating zoomers being unable to deal with โ€œbland food."
because you're weak, impatient, and overspending as a result
>My generation is broke
your generation isn't broke, it's just terminally impatient
when adjusted for age, zoomers both earn more and own more than boomers
that is, a 25yo zoomer earns more and is richer than a 25yo boomer
so why do you keep bitching that you're "broke"? because you looked at people richer than you are because they are OLDER than you are, and thought "gee, why don't I have the savings of 60 year olds at the age of 20?"
>and more than likely has to eat bland stuff
food quality and variety has gone up so much that the market share of generic and cheap foodstuffs is lower than ever before
for example, in America, white sliced sandwich bread (wonderbread) has less than half the market share today than it did in the 60s, because Americans are eating more old-style loaves

>If a boomer spent 1/3 of his monthly pay for mortgage and food he'd live like a king
and if a boomer bought as many consumer appliances, ate out, and travelled as often as a zoomer did, he would live like a pauper

If zoomers lived like boomers they wouldn't have any financial problems
that means cooking 20 out of 21 meals a week, buying modest houses ~1 hour's travel time from city centres, buying cheaper cars, buying fewer consumer electronics appliances, flying for holidays only once every few years, etc

Folger's costs a few cents a cup. Starbucks is what, $5 a cup? $6? (I don't know, I've never bought a drink at Starbucks since Covid19)
that fucking adds up
apply the Folger's treatment across all spending categories, suddenly you'll afford rent

>A zoomer can't even pay rent with 1/3 of his wage, not to mention the food inflation of the past few years
this is true and we are all feeling the pinch, but welcome to babby's first recession
the ratio of rent to other components of the basket of goods has changed
but that's fine because the other components have changed as well, e.g. appliances and entertainment is dirt cheap
that is why we are unknowingly overspending on these categories and need to REBALANCE

Cutting back on food, entertainment and appliance expenditure would free up enough cash to cover the rental increase.

>sunk-cost economy bullshit
You don't know what you're blabbering about
>and would be still living in apartments
In European cities and very dense American cities, yes
In most cities, no

And even so, modern apartments aren't terrible to live in. Boomer houses weren't built to today's standards. It's the suburbs full of McMansions that eat up real estate land. Townhouses are a good halfway compromise, and are also good for housing three-generation families. The real boomer lifestyle, once upon a time, was living with one's parents until one got married, because it was cheaper.

I bought a few cases of these for emergencies and ate one just to see what they were like, they're not bad. Not good, but not bad. Which is kind of what you want emergency food to taste like. I recommend them to people as part of an emergency kit, I keep a few of them in my car alongside a few gallons of water, and about a month's worth at home.
General rule of thumb, you should have ~60k calories of nonperishable food and 50 gallons of water (or nonperishable, hydrating fluids like seltzers, electrolyte drinks, etc) per person in your home.

Using polyurethane barrels which previously held either food grade syrup or chlorine bleach, both are rather plentiful in the US near bottling plants.

I buy mine in quantity since they make great easily sealed UV-proof containers by decapitating one and debottoming another than capping the first with the bottom of the second. This seals so well I use it to store grain for my chickens and survives just fine for years outdoors.

I use them for storing clothing, engine parts I'm not using soon and anything else I want to keep dry that fits.

I cut the inside top from one which now sits in my bathroom as a laundry hamper. In case of need I empty it then run a hose (farm grade, NO green garbage hose, ever) through the window and fill it so I can bucket flush the shitter and have ample washing water.

A row of open barrels sits under my eaves (I don't want the labor of gutters having gone to French drains decades ago) for quick washup when wrenching outdoors and wetting down areas before I weld. it's a great way to store them usefully.

Poly is also fuel proof so an intact, clean blue poly drum is a discreet way to quickly fill up before inbound storms etc. I would mainly use a new takeoff aluminum Class 8 truck diesel tank (Fecebook Marketplace is good to me) because it fits nicely in my truck (and store it dry since few events are true surprises).

Cut drums would be fine for storing food containers of course.
