In 2011, JSOC had the Middle East divided into two areas of responsibility for special mission units. Delta Force was responsible for running most missions in Iraq, SEAL Team Six was responsible for Afghanistan. Since the mission was launched out of Afghanistan, the SEALs got the mission.

It probably didn't help that Delta Force had completely botched the first attempts to get bin Laden in 2001 either.

IIRC Rangers were held in reserve just across the border in case the Pakistani police or military responded (spoiler: they took one look at the shootout and kept on driving), on raids like this, Rangers are usually used as a blocking force or held in reserve so it's not uncommon.

Direct Action is not the primary mission of the Green Berets, working with local forces is. Delta Force was originally created as a spin-off of the Green Berets for this purpose.

Personally I think they should have given the mission to MARSOC just so Osama could've been shot by some cheeky fuckers wearing M81 Woodland camo (they even could have taken his M65 Woodland field jacket as a souvenir)

anon for future reference T1/T2 just refers to how much funding for readiness a unit recieves outside of wartime. Delta, the seals etc, due to their nature of being required to be called at "any time" has the same funding at all time, as opposed to rangers or the green berets who will not receive the same amount as in peace time.

Not that versed in US SpecOps but I think Green Berets have entirely different scope of operations. And Rangers are more of an elite infantry unit than high speed low drag operators.
No idea why Delta didn't do it tough. I would've tough this is exactly job for Delta.

Rangers mission when I deployed as an enabler with them was snatch and grab night time operations on HVTs. Which is exactly what the Bin Laden raid was. If we were talking about disarming a nuke or infiltrating a harbor or some shit to sabotage a vessel okay send the SEALs. Bin Laden was known to use body doubles. They had to have an intact corpse for genetic verification, as well as to have something to prevent devotees from going "what-if". If he was obliterated in an airstrike, there could always be plausible deniability. Considering how nobody from either side is saying he's not actually dead, it's pretty safe to say he is, in fact, dead.
