S-500 is a rebranded S-300V upgrade. It's an ABM system, it's akin to something like Arrow 3 or THAAD but worse. They say it has anti-air capabilities but the thing is fuckhuge and clearly designed to go up and not cross-range so those claims are dubious at best

Whenever you ask yourself "is this the worst ever" remember the early models and realize it's a retarded question.
It's pretty bad for a long range SAM intended to intercept fighters but far from the worst ever.

The concept was a good one, but it took them a few decades to get the technicals down. Once they did it was the AD space-defining system until the Patriot eventually overtook it, followed by other competing systems.

The thing with SAMs is that they must have strong continuous technical support to keep them up to date on threats and countermeasures. The Russian contractors who take care of the S-300s are clearly not as strong as they should be, resulting in the system lagging behind battlefield realities. Clients get no support at all, and the Russians themselves get it only slowly, after the system has suffered losses.
