Pic related. I saw these tapco handguards advertised EVERYWHERE in the mid-late 2000s. Especially places like CDNN, Cheaper than Dirt, etc. They were soooo inexpensive.

I have never seen one in person, never, not in the last 20 years of going to range several times a month.

Of course not. Are you joking or trolling or what? Drag coefficient isn't constant for a given form across all speeds, all bullets aren't designed to go at all speeds, and bullets have design imperatives other than optimising their drag coefficient for a given range of speeds.

Uhh no. Tapco was/is cheap bullshit. Magpul takes their plastic and their products extremely seriously, and manages to be the best choice on the market in dozens of applications while making shit in the US and selling it for a reasonable price. Fagpul put in a mountain of effort to be where they are. Tapco is like dollar general tier what's the absolute cheapest way to make this, and still somehow get people to pay money for it. I know you're trolling a lil but I feel for nogunz and newgunz who might not know better.

Thatโ€™s actually an insane capability to have, but I wonder if a battery-powered, switch/button actuated version wouldnโ€™t be a much better execution. Comparing this auto-zoom magic to manually adjusting the magnification seems like night and day. But it would be much better if one did not have to jerk off his rifle to accomplish it.

With all the battery-powered shit we put on our rifles, it makes sense to have a huge, central battery pack that manages power consumption by priority (ie. everything turns off at 10% so the remainder can power the optic forever). Place this pack inside or underneath the stock where it will be out of the way and improve the gunโ€™s weight distribution.

How come powered rails never took off? Flaws and shortcomings inherent to the system, or just poor execution that one time it was tried?

It's really not. It's a meme.

Put a 4x ACOG on that rifle and you can engage every target he does in that video effectively with less delay and more positive control on the weapon. ACOG is OP and until you've used one and learned to appreciate the wide FoV you won't get it.

Anyone who complains about the eye relief hasn't set their rifle up correctly and/or is shouldering wrong.

There's already a NATO standard for power rails and it includes data-link capabilities as well.

It's just not in use yet because until the rest of the ecosystem is there the use case is very limited, and you also introduce a single point of failure.

Imagine a solder point breaking in your battery back and now your optic illumination, thermal, wml, and lam all stop working at once.

Alright so delete the manual control and latency and imagine you have a magic optic whose magnification you can adjust at will, with mind control. 0 effort. Is this a useful feature? Is this magic optic something youโ€™d rather have than a fixed 4x power ACOG? The answer is yes (because a 4x ACOG is just one state of the magic optic) And this is the Rifle-Masturbator-5000 in its limit. Itโ€™s kind of a shit product now but with better execution could be something very special. Youโ€™ll never adjust magnification with your thoughts, lol, obviously, but you can get close and do it with a flick of your left thumb.

>โ€but nothing is free, all things have a costโ€ I hear you say

Yes but it is minimal. A tiny motor incorporated into an LPVO with a tape switch connected to one of those switches that looks like the volume control on your steering wheel

About the only thing you canโ€™t go without is the optic, so a button cell in the optic for redundancy alleviates the main concern of the whole thing failing.

Variable magnification is really only useful above 4x, but yeah if I could have an optic with the FoV of an ACOG that I could fluidly run from 1x-24x with my mind or a button that would be great. Ideally it also has light amplification and thermal modes that can be easily toggles at will, as well as hybrid overlays. And it also robust and redundant. Sounds great.

But this dumb ass LPVO slide whistle isnt any of that stuff.

In fairness, I never said it was. I said the capability was insane, definitely not the way itโ€™s achieved, lol.

On a short to medium range assault rifle, you donโ€™t even need magnification greater than 4x. A simple button to toggle between 1x and 4x might even be the ultimate optics solution for a 0-300yd gun. Nice and compact too. How short could a 1-4x LPVO be made?

The scope switch works fine. Magnification adjustable via remote switch on the rail only makes sense if you have a digital optic. A few decades from now, we probably will have powered rails and digital day/night/thermal optics.

Night Vision has not really proliferated as far as you'd think, the US is still the only military that issues them to regular line infantry. Every other military on the planet only issues them to their SF.

US SF also practices passive aiming, that's the entire reason for the SU/PEQ 231A (eotech), and passive aiming is not a concern for infantry. They still put LAMs on their rifles because it's incredibly useful in enclose structures where they aren't at risk of being observed by outside NV devices or thermals.

The concerns about getting your position revealed by using lasers is entirely a "light discipline" issue and can be resolved by training, not to mention a well trained enemy that has NV more than likely has thermals and will know your position anyway. Just knowing the enemy's position doesn't mean you can actually neutralize them

I don't think they're totally useless, but the cost/benefit ratio is crap. I have Streamlight TLR-VIR IIs on a couple of my rifles, and the dot is easily visible at well over 500 yards with gen 3 NODs. They're also 1/5 the cost, half the weight, and don't have parasitic drain issues like the more powerful lasers.

>>63870258
Also they were mostly operating from armored convoys and larger groups so everybody already knew where they were. Any small unconventional force is going to prioritize passive aiming as much as possible to keep the enemy unsure about their numbers and location.

I don't think they are as quick as one might think, you just adhere to light discipline rules the same way as anything. You don't just leave it on, you're supposed to identify a target, aim at the target, hold on the laser to fine adjust, take one, maybe two shots, then release, ideally moving back into cover.

It's not end all beat all by any means, just another tool in the toolbox.

Picrel is the comprised of the stupidest accessories in existence, but honestly, it looks pretty sick. I like it.

Crye precision (I think it was them) did something similar. They made a bullpup 12 gauge revolver called the six12. In my opinion an amalgamation of 3 inferior firearm types (I just donโ€™t like shotguns), but when combined, they harmonize in a way that seems to ameliorate their least desireable attributes. Itโ€™s the only shotgun Iโ€™d buy (but they donโ€™t make it).

NV is common but not that common. More people have thermal scopes and will see you anyway.

Fighting in the US is either race war (hopefully) or civil war. If itโ€™s a civil war and youโ€™re fighting the govt you better assume they can see you already and hide better. The IR laser isnโ€™t going to give you away. If itโ€™s race war, Jamal and Pedro arenโ€™t likely to own sighted in rifles let alone NV to pair with them. I canโ€™t see the situation where serious gun owners are getting into squad level firefights with other serious gun owners both using NV and IR lasers.
