Could you theoretically put birdshot in a rifle round so it could work like the normal 5.56 / 7.62 round? Then you wouldnt need another weapon to defend you against the drones.

Birdshot? No.
The high velocity and rifling would make it spread out absurdly fast, and there'd be so little of it the pattern density would be piss. Lots of people have experimented with larger shot sizes in a rifle cartridge but I don't know if any have actually been used to put down a drone.

Range and pattern density are the main problems, neither of which are on your side firing packets of pellets out of a rifle.

Imagine if birds carried explosives and they flew directly into you.
Do you think you could be like john wick and shoot them down before they hit you?

Maybe you'll get the first and it miraculously detonates in the air instead of flinging its payload at you through carried momentum.
Can you do that for the next several birds coming your way from any direction?

yes, they use plastic sabot to shoot 5 ball bearing balls
and yes, it fouls the barel like crazy
