EL/M-2080 Green Pine used in the Arrow ABM system currently protecting Israel. AESA operating in the UHF and L bands, all-in-one search, tracking and guidance functions. Sold to India and South Korea (Block-B upgraded version). Note the substantial cooling support required — power output is not reported but is claimed that it can be turned into a DEW. It’s unknown if the T/X modules are GaAs or GaN but going by its development date it’s probably GaAs. Since it’s AESA I wonder if the UHF to L thing is BS and it can operate in a much wider band in reality.

A weak point of a stealth jet is its radar! Why? Because it can’t have advanced RAM covering it, the nose cover has to be radar-open so that it doesn’t interfere with its own radar! In order to minimize the risk of detection, the radar is locked into an upward-facing angle so that it won’t reflect radar waves back down to ground-based radars. The sides of the radar are covered with RAM material to block detection of the struts and cables behind the array to further minimize the chance of someone seeing it from an angle. But if the radar is flying above them and looking downwards, that antenna will light up like a mirror under a spotlight; pilots must always be aware of limitations like this in stealth planes, you are NOT invisible.

It's crazy what's rolling off production lines nowadays. It's a shame AESA radars have to look so boring externally, but they probably aren't as boring from inside the C2 room.

It's interesting how hands-on everything used to be, there was much more cowboy shit going on. Now it's all kill chains and algorithms, and soon AI with stuff like Project Maven, in the near future all someone will have to do is press a button and authenticate decisions taken for him by a machine. Probably for the better, of course, but I can't help but feel nostalgic for those times which my zoomer self never even lived.

TIL (63871077) about Swedish underground elevator radar towers: PS-860 and PS-861. The actual radar is made by ITT-Gilfillan. Still in use today.
