I'd wager the trick is to spot movement or that something changed when it shouldn't have. If you notice a bush isn't where it was an hour ago that's probably your man, but with so much to keep track of as long as the target is slow and methodical about it there's just too much to keep track of for your average normie.

Laying prone and not moving it's insanely easy provided you have something to cover yourself with, once again, to change the shape.
