You have to remember that the middle east basically operates on laws of the jungle, where posturing is key to survival as it keeps you from being ganged up on. now that works well against other ME countries where the military is basically an extension of the ruler and his clan and arent supposed to do any real fighting outside of black bagging opposition members.
So non of these things was ever supposed to go in to action. the fact that it did, and actually works and dosent fall down/blow up in the air is by ME standards a tremendous success.

The f14 is scary, a capable fighter that could do damage.
So you can bet a lot of resources were used to track every single one using unlimited satelite and other methods. Taking them out as soon as something is in the area and they are on the ground.
They don't want to fight them in the air.

LOL I'd be willing to bet a year's salary those things can barely take a off and fly a few laps on parade days anymore, much less actually hold their own in a fight. Their electronics and avionics havent been upgraded in decades, they would probably be utterly helpless even against modern F-16s. And it wouldnt even be a contest against F-35.

Maybe, but they had powerful radars for the time that probably see even modern fighters from a decent distance.
Not sure if they have armaments capable of making full use like the original.
If they had them off then popped them on and got close enough to see a modern jet and got a lucky kill it would be a huge propaganda win.

Properly retrofitted they could relay the location of aircraft while staying at range and allowing more plentiful aircraft to see the enemy they normaly couldn't.

They could be a threat. It is all about adjusting their role to suit the battlefield.
Destroying them prevents iran from figuring out how they can still be effective and against what.
They were designed to destroy other jets, while most modern fighters are designed as multirole and sacrifice some of that capability.
Obviously the f22 would destroy them, and the f35 would usualy win but could get unlucky in a strategic trap. F16s and f15s that Israel relies on may be quite vulnerable though.
