Go to college. Deferments will last a bit and by that point what you'll do is go to the university's "draft specialist" or whatever they call it to get the jump on when/if your number gets called. Just go every day. When it does get called, go immediately to whoever is on campus for recruitment and finagle OCS or intel or some other bullshit gig.

It's a great resume for any STEM job.

Guy interned at my chemical pilot plant/laboratory was a former enlisted nuke. Got into Northeastern solely on the strength of being a nuke, and Uncle Sam picked up the bill for one of the best and expensive STEM schools in the country.

Was getting a major in Chemical Engineering and was going straight into a MBA on a rocket ship to middle management at any chemical engineering company. As far as I know, he never got a job as a nuke anywhere outside the Navy.

Biggest risk of being a nuke is not making a realistic assessment of your academic abilities and personal discipline, because if you wash out of the notoriously difficult training program, your ass still belongs to the Navy until your enlistment contract is up.

Our vet was this little e4 and she was emotionally dead. All she did was kill cats that she had trapped the entire deployment. The guys we relieved had already killed most of the dogs in the area- dogs were smart enough to stay away from the fob. On patrols though the dogs were more of a threat than terrorists. The first few weeks we tried just kicking them away out of compassion for dogs back home, but they weren't normal. They were feral that had literally eaten dead human bodies and were vicious, they'd eat kids playing in the town if they were alone. Whenever the vet heard a single gunshot she knew another dog was killed and was just happy it wasn't her doing it.
