I'm on a very fixed income, and can only spare about 300 dollars for a first-time buy of a firearm. A friend of mine said "If you want a gun but gotta pinch pennies, Hi Points are the way to go."

With that being said, I see that there are a lot of models. Which Hi point has decent reliability with a good clip capacity?

C9 is the standard. The 40, 45 and 10mm models have a much larger frame and the 9mm is already really bulky to begin with.

I've owned several Hi-Points out of pure curiosity and they are an acceptable option for the truly destitute, but the design is still pretty bad. Straight blowback, difficult to take apart, horrible recoil impulse, weak parts. They have a great warranty but you are still out a gun while making use of it.

$300 doesn't seem like much and it isn't, but opening up your budget to $200-250 and maybe some used guns gives you a lot of better options. Something like a PD Trade in Glock, used Springfield XD, Taurus G3 or a SAR B6P isn't going to impress anyone, but will last longer and be more useful for a wider range of tasks such as concealed carry (where an HP would be too bulky).

A reminder to any prospective or new hi point owners.
The magazines suck, and often won't run reliably unless downloaded until they're broken in.
They also might just be fucked from the factory. Shoot your gun, use your warranty if necessary.
That is all

Damn. Hi-Points got expensive. Go to gun.deals and wait for something to reach your price point. There are sales going on all throughout the year. Gun.deals tracks them. I bought a Beretta APX A1 Carry for $170 during Christmas time a few years back. Plenty of other guns go for as cheap, if not cheaper, and are much more wieldy than a Hi-Point.

I wanted to get a C9 for a long time because I ideologically support Hi Point. I've seen so many people do funny mods of C9s. But then I heard about the YC9 coming out for and I waited for that. It finally came out and I got it. The YC9 is fun as fuck. I really really have a lot of fun with. I put a fat compensator on the front. The sights are bright red and yellow. It's not good but it's good enough and very fun.
Now that I have the YC9 I want the C9 too.
I am begging for someone to make an aftermarket extended mag for the YC9. But in the mean time I will buy a C9 or two C9s and paint them funny colors.

Check out police supply stores in your area. When agencies get new guns they usually trade in their old ones to them. Theyโ€™re usually sold dirt cheap. I got a Walther P99QA in 9mm for $299 and my uncle got an M&P in 357 Sig for $350. I also got a USP40 and a 5 screw Model 10 for under $500 a piece that way.

Imho, they're actually not that good for pinching pennies, since you NEED to shoot them. If it ain't worn in, its gonna jam; and to wear it in, you need to spend money on ammo.
They're fantastic plinking guns though, once they're worn, they practically can't jam (alongside being indestructible).
The choice of caliber is really up to preference though, along with model. I just choice the basic bitch C9 since its alright enough.

The break in is mostly for the mags as far as I know, so the same can be accomplished tediously and cheaply by unloading and loading them a good few times on top of actually shooting the thing.
But actually shooting the thing is important because you can find out if the mags or the gun itself are fucked which is very possible given their QC.
"Just shooting the gun" might be a bigger ask if you have a pistol instead of a carbine but really the carbine's the better buy anyway

I got my Taurus G3 for $350 for the gun and 4 mags from Academy. Im a poorfag so it was honestly a pretty good deal.
>>63875076 (OP)
Get something less bulky than a Hi Point if you plan to carry it anywhere, my G3 is a little hard to keep from printing and it's way thinner than the C9, but im also a lanklet

Mags & feed ramps.
The ramp has a coating on it like the rest of the gun, but it can be sticky at first, so rounds won't always seat properly.
I've even seen guys that ended up with bumps in the coat that made it basically unusable, but a little polishing fixed it instantly.
If they polished the feed ramps straight out the factory, they'd have a much better reputation.
I've never had their carbines before, but last I remember the disassembly looked shitty; I wonder how well the 995P is.
