I think the proportion of Private Pyles in the world is overblown. And the effectiveness of propaganda and social pressure is underestimated. A draft isn't happening unless it's a nightmare tier ww3 nuclear scenario, and in that case I think most people would just go along with it.

In any case, the first thing you do with draftees is to have them sit around and guard shit at home. They are nowhere near as competent as professional soldiers so you want to put them in the lowest impact roles.

Pre-bootcamp for fatties and retards designed to go soft on them and prepare them for actual boot camp so they have a chance at passing.
USMC has done it for years, it's basically just a month long (I think, maybe 2?) mini-bootcamp where they hold your hand through everything.

The "Gomer Pyle" character in FMJ was social commentary on the real-life "Project 100,000" which was conducted during the course of the Vietnam war. The idea was to recruit people who would normally not qualify for military service due to physical and mental defects, but use them to fill in roles where ideally this wouldn't be as much of a problem. The results were absolutely disastrous, with these soldiers suffering horrible losses and being a huge liability to everyone around them. Besides which these individuals fared even worse than the average serviceman after being discharged, suffering extensively as a result of their prior service.

Besides being a complete waste of resources, money and lives the program was on shaky ethical grounds from the beginning and is universally considered to be a predatory abuse of vulnerable Americans in hindsight.

Hopefully enough was learned from that disaster that nobody would try it again, but bad ideas have a tendency to be contagious. There's ample evidence that using mentally deficient people in a combat zone is a net negative to overall combat effectiveness, but that doesn't mean the people making decisions aren't themselves either cynical or retarded enough to try it again anyway.

Recruiters work with poolees before they leave, which is enough usually, and the graduation rate from basic is something like 90%.

Full on regime change is not realistically in the cards. We tried it in Afghanistan and despite a smaller population/country/absence of any real functional governance structure in the first place we wasted over a decade replacing the Taliban with the Taliban. My dad served his year as a conscript with a guy who tried that.
The guy would shit and piss himself regularly, and refused to wash, shave, or brush his teeth, shit and piss in bed, etc.
Evidently the drill instructors were familiar with that tactic, because they ignored it and hazed the fuck out of the guy's fellow conscripts instead, Full Metal Jacket style.
It eventually culminated in Recruit Poopypants getting catching a life threatening beating, then getting dragged in the showers by his fellow recruits who then proceed to scrub much of his skin off with brooms, floor scrubbing brushes, and various industrial cleaning agents.
While this was going on, other recruits washed all of his uniform items repeatedly with so much bleach that his uniforms were pure white.
Recruit Poopypants maintained flawless bodily hygiene after that ordeal, and the drill instructors made sure he always kept his crisp white uniforms spotless.

This still happend in this century. When I was a "senior conscript" (i.e. already served 6 months), one of our new conscripts got his automatic promotion after finishing bootcamp late, b.c. he allegedly harrassed and smeared a guy, who didn't shower, full of boot polish.
Also we had one guy in my bootcamp unit who was obviously mentally deficient and I'm not sure how they let him in, more so since that was the time where it was very easy to not the conscripted. I think he wasn't allowed to touch guns in the end (some with like 2 other people who tested hot on the urine tests)

And also, the drill sergeant actually commends him before dying, saying good job, son, now you're a real marine.

Why do you think the USA has refused to operate its materiel in/over Ukraine against an invading Russia for years but after two weeks is willing to openly mobilise in support of an act of Israeli aggression? Ukraine is a costly territorial dispute, whereas Iran is an economic and capital gain.
