Has he actually said that, or are you making fun of him saying there's a few things you shouldn't do with a 1911?
Some of that is true, and it's why later guns don't tend to follow the 1911 exactly.

Now that's just making shit up. Yeah, I know the flag waving, bible owning guys who Russia pays to tell you what to think probably have repeatedly told you this over and over, but guys in his NG unit - guys who vehemently disagreed with his politics and voted for Trump because they listen to the same agiprop you do - have gone on record saying that everything he said about his military record is the truth.

>>63887658
They all do, but some designs and constructions are more prone to wear than others. For instance, 1911s have fixed extractors which don't pivot, thus 1911s typically hate having their chamber loaded from the ejection port, the part was never designed to handle that, and it's very rough on it, it puts a bad leverage on it.
Similarly, slamming the slide home on an empty chamber with a traditional fixed 1911 extractor means that the brass case isn't there to take the impact, the extractor ends up taking it instead, which adds up.

This is why some 1911s (like S&Ws) have their design changed for later style external extractors, and why no actually remotely modern pistol does that style of fixed internal extractor anymore.
That's the kind of thing which is actually important to know for people who insist on carrying that sort of relic, which is more than a few.

Slamming the slide home on an empty chamber isn't the end of the world or anything for a 1911, but loading the chamber from the ejection port will do quicker damage.

>loading the chamber from the ejection port
Well, we can agree there. The extractor wasn't designed to be loaded that way, but slides literally slam every time the gun is fired. "the casing cushions it" the casing is a piece of metal.

>>63888069
I used to like Mr. Ayoob, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Hackathorn; they convinced me to practice more with heavy double-action triggers. Their videos on dropping slides and their videos on weapon mounted lights are hella cringe though.

>the casing is a piece of metal
A softer metal with more give. The breechface and barrel are hardened machined/forged steel, the casing is comparatively soft and drawn brass.

The primer on a case is also a piece of metal, but the firing pin dents it to crush the compound inside, and just the same, the primer deforming from this event means that the primer body is taking the brunt of the energy in this exchange.
Modern guns can pretty well tolerate firing on an empty chamber, and also slamming the slide home on an empty chamber, but the 1911 is not a modern gun, it's an antique design.

Some people do that to load the +1 in their pistol. They shouldn't, but they do.

>>63888441
The 1911 is overrated from a modern perspective, but in the year 1911, it really was a cutting edge fucking pistol. The 1911 managed to be even better than the previous best pistol in the entire world, which was the Luger, and the Luger wasn't just best by default, it really was a seriously good pistol in its own right, which is why they kept being used in spite of being surpassed.

>disassembly and cleaning is a pain in the ass
Could be better, could be worse.

>can induce the "idiot scratch" if you move the slide lever a specific but easy to induce way
A symptom of its older style of design, but just don't idiot scratch it.

>heavy
Not that bad.

>10mm versions broke their frames at alarming frequency
They didn't really, the Delta Elite would start beating itself when people either handloaded 10mm crazy hot, or they insisted on lightening the trigger (as if the stock 1911 trigger is bad, lol), which changed the dwell time and timing.
Also, during Delta Elite production, Colt figured they could vastly extend the lifespan of all 1911 frames by making this relief cut into it, which you will see on near all other 1911 production now. This solved most frame issues with the Delta Elite.

>only 8 rounds
In a time of 6 round revolvers and 8 round automatic pistols, it was contemporary.
The Broomhandle held 10, but that thing really was a small carbine with a detachable stock, in my opinion.

>more expensive "boutique" versions that run smoother ironically are less reliable due to the tighter tolerances creating said issues
If you say so, but you aren't exactly taking the deluxe pistol to a muddy battlefield.

>the stupid fucking grip safety
I actually never liked that. Thankfully you can drill and pin it.

>fixed extractor makes chambering empty bad for the gun

This completely overshadows all your other complaints about the 1911. Trigger control is the most important aspect of shooting in general according to Jerry Miculek. And yeah GI 1911s are kind of rough, but the standard 45 single stack 1911 itself was pretty much perfected in the 90's with custom features like extended thumb safety, beavertail, improved sights, etc. that you can get as factory options today. 1911s are more popular than ever now.

To me, I do love the 1911, but today it's a weapon of tradition, not of practicality. It's good enough that you could still count on it in a civilian life setting, if it's what you want, though you should be informed and clear about its actual pros and cons.

Could you do better today? Sure.
Could you still go with a 1911? Yeah, it's gonna do alright, just be sure that you know it exactly.

>>63890095
>1911s are more popular than ever now.
Partially because of their long history and how anyone can just make them these days, and again, they are a traditional weapon (and that's a good thing, it's a tradition worth celebrating and appreciating).
