They are tuned to run hotter ammunition and they foul up pretty fast. Cleaning one takes a while too, so a lot of people don't do it adequately or at all.
I find that Magtech factory 44 is cheap and high velocity enough (it is specifically white-listed in the manual for factory approved ammunition), and Ammo Inc 44 is slightly hotter, cheaper and works well too. I prefer FMJ for both since it helps reduce fouling slightly.
>>63890703You really do have to be on point when shooting them as well. You have to hold it steady but keep your thumb away from the slide release (it is easy to activate accidentally) and you can't teacup the magazine because that will over-insert it.
I also found 2 relevant points.
1) Aftermarket ProMag magazines are totally worthless, to nobody's surprise. But they are sold widely. That could be a big source of complaints where people have a bad magazine and think it's the gun. Factory magazines need break in as well before they smooth out.
2) In California only a specific list of the mk XIX .44s are on the approved handgun roster and they are always sold out. Magnum Research sells them as fast as they can make them. This means California shooters are only getting .44 models and they make a sizeable chunk of the market for these guns because disposable income techie money. But these are mostly dadshorts shooters who aren't really experienced or dedicated enough to troubleshoot such a gun. I suspect MR is also sending lower quality QC rejects there because they know they can sell them no matter how bad they are and they usually won't get any complaints because Californians frequently buy guns just to show off that they will never shoot.
