/LAG/ - lever action general
ITT: everything levergun

I'm in the market for a .22 and a .357/.38, my budget is $900 for the former, $1500 for the latter. Both guns would be mostly for plinking/LARPing, might use the rimfire for small game on a buddy's property, might use the centerfire as an HD gun because I live in ((New York))) and don't have my (((permit))) yet. I intend on outfitting both with peep sights and maybe a red dot for the centerfire.

>rimfire
For the .22 I was thinking of either a Browning BLR or a used Marlin 39A, leaning heavily towards the Marlin because it looks a hell of a lot easier to clean. Does anyone know if Ruger is going to bring the 39A back into production any time soon? Is anyone familiar with the Chiappa LA322? I've heard they're kinda chintzy but haven't handled one IRL. Thoughts on how the accuracy/smoothness compare between the two?

>centerfire
Winchester/Miroku 1892 vs 1873 vs Ruglin 1894. Which one does /k/ prefer? I've done some research and know that Marlin has a better warranty (although I doubt that a Miroku product will be troublesome) and that Ruger did a good job unfucking them, but I haven't handled any newer Marlin products recently to inspect fit and finish myself. Thoughts on accuracy, smoothness, reliability etc? Does anyone run a marble sight on an 1892, and does it interfere with the tang safety?

you mean BL-22.
the BL-22s are made in japan at least

henrys are made in the USA
>Winchester/Miroku 1892 vs 1873 vs Ruglin 1894
check to see if any of them are gay with .38. sometime lever guns aren't reliable with .38/.44 special. miroku is obviously good to go. an 1873 should be a slicker action, but heavier. a marlin will be easier to scope/put receiver sights on but.
idk if the marlins accept tang sights out of the box, they do accept skinner receiver sights. all of the winchster guns will say on the sight if they are drilled and tapped to receive sights. I think they all are

Right, thanks. I dislike the sheet metal cover on the Henries, it's dinky and toylike IMO. Thanks for the tip, i'll do some more research. One of the models I'm considering is the Marlin 1894 Trapper because it comes with skinners from the factory (I think the stainless is kinda guady but I like the corrosion resistance).

>Chiappa LA322
Handled one in store. Points well, lightweight like you'expect from a .22, external fit is nice. Then I tried the takedown feature and it took the store owner and me some 15 minutes to put it back together, so I ditched the idea of buing one. Sheetmetal and die cast internals loosely hanging on pins don't inspire confidence. I know that Henry .22s are cast potmetal, too, but they're designed around that (or the Erma guns they're copied from were), so they feel more robust.

Browning BL22 is very nice to both look on and handle, great fit, quality finish, short lever throw, all steel. A gun to pass to your grandkids. Heard they suck to work on requiring octopus levels of dexterity to reassemble, never tried myself. Checking some gunsmithing video on them may be a good idea.

How about used guns? Gives you some more options. I have a 70s Winchester 9422 and I love that little gun. All steel, lovely bluing, heirloom gun as well. Had to replace broken "Extractor, Left", but parts are available and cheap.

the h004s have pot metal, but the receiver cover is more substantial. you can always buy after market skinners. The only issue is skinners are kind of ass at being a target sight

If you can find one of the Browning B92s from like 78-82(?).
Those are mechanically the same as the original 92s(no rebounding hammer/tang safety) and they're basically the strongest traditional levergun design. (ie, not a Savage 99, BLR, erc)

You're welcome. I really like my baby Winchester so I shill it whenever applicable.

Watched a video on BL 22 disassembly and the 9422 is a lot easier. No need for any other tools than a flathead screwdriver, and the only part that's easy to lose is a transverse pin holding the front and rear half of the bolt together, and even that only comes out when the bolt is outside. You can't slam it together like an SKS, but you don't need watchmaking skills either, just some patience and a little bit of wiggling.

9422 tend to have 11 mm dovetail on top, so fitting skinners peep sights (or some optics) is doable.

Nice. Do you ever clean it by just running a bore snake through the ejection port? If so is it as inconvenient as I imagine?

Also anons if I were to get a '73, do I need to worry about solvent dissolving the shell lifter?

Yes. Once you get the little brass weight into the chamber it's easy. Some fine motor skills required but no neurosurgery, and at least you can see what you're doing through the ejection port.

More often than not I partially disassemble the gun, though. It's not difficult and lets me sweep the insides with a shaving brush to get rid of half-burnt powder flakes catching there. I would use boresnake even on disassembled gun out of convenience, it's too easy to scratch your fingers on pointy rear of the receiver when pushing a cleaning rod from the back, unless you use a really long rod.

Picrel is my pairing for cheap range fun.

Dunno, I've handled a Taurus copy of a Browning style .22 pump and it was pretty nice. Would have bought it on the spot if I didn't already have the 9422.
20 inch Rossi Puma in .357 is on my wishlist unless I come across a good deal on something a little fancier.
On the other hand, the new Rossi .22 Gallery pump guns are ugly as sin with their cross-bolt safeties and plastic trigger guards.
