As someone with a bunch of different ARs, and and AUG A3 M1, the AUG A3 M1 is the first "other" rifle you should get when you have a bunch of different ARs. It's not better, but it's different in a good way, and it still reliably slings lead where you want it, accurately.

The AUG fascinates me in that it has evolved so damn little until recently. from A1 to A3 you only really have new optic and rails and from then on some new components and caliber conversions but the stock, barrels, even the front grip just stay the same forever and you can always know and AUG.

Meanwhile they tried shit like the HBAR and 9mm versions which are wacky but far less useful than other options, and wont try modern features like a bolt release or triggers that dont suck donkey dick.

Aug 101:
Child of universal service rifle program, heavy, but weight is rearwards, works well with ugl

Turned out to be very armoury friendly, polymer was hard to damage, damage to it rarely rendered rifle inoperable. In the 2000s the quick barrel change in COIN was hugely valuable. We never had to adopt aneimic barrel lengths. But it was heavy.

Original optics considered poor by today's standards but never forget, that also made us very early adopters of optics on service rifles. And pretty quickly it was upgraded to picatiny.

Other interesting things, early adoption of pistol foregrip, use of fire grip as monopod. That paid off very quickly and it's very hard to do that with ARs because of the magazine length when prone.

It also got upgraded to have a silent cocking feature and works with .300BLK, armoury wise, that paid off too. The 9mm was never any use, don't think it was even used for training.

It was a shit load better then the L1A1, and the French hate the famas. It's better than people think but it was a wild choice.

The new ones, at least the new Australian ones are austeyr f90.
Not many changes, quiet a bit lighter at 3.2kg, better IR/NV rails.
The grenade launcher got the thumbs down though, pull ring trigger, not good with 40mm recoil, likely to break, likely to get snagged. And the trigger being in the grip housing significantly increases the chance of some penut firing it shouldred at some raghead two metres in front of him. Which could potentially be really funny, but could also foreseeably blow up a bunch of our guys

Category A guns are banned but allowed with a police exception. But here's the neat trick. Police can't evaluate the justification you've put on the form at all, as long as it's not something retarded like "gimme, I wanna", they auto-grant it.
And "collecting" is a valid justification.

The AUG's trigger feels like a really good Nerf gun trigger because it's a plastic trigger shoe pushing a plastic sear out of the way of a plastic hammer, but you can adjust all the takeup out of it with common hand tools and the reduced power trigger springs exist.
A bad trigger gets in the way of doing the shooting tasks that you need to do, and the AUG's objectively doesn't.
