i tried making a bunch out of curiosity, then hiking a bunch a day.
i failed getting em tight enough the first times but after a bunch of re-tries (and YT guides) i got them fitted properly. feels no worse than any sock, dries fast too.

what is your experience?

Get a stick, drying problem solved.
Turn inside out, cleaning twice as effective.

There's no INTELLIGENT argument in favor of a wrap being superior to a regular tube sock. But I will admit, it was fun and funny trying to figure it out. Not OP

these are essentially pre-sock socks.
they're useful if your feet are injured and you need to put dressings on them and you don't have a larger size of sock, but not really otherwise

to wash socks in the field takes longer vs washing a towel, socks take more effort than just wetting a towel and putting it to dry

I've found no difference save for the thickest of socks, because a sock absorbs less water than a pretty long sheet of cloth

As a longtime handwasher of both socks and dishtowels, this is true, but lacking context. Socks take longer primarily because of the weave and fabric, which tends to capture small bits of debris and form "pills" that are rolled and compacted fibers embedded with soiling. A flat linen weave of a towel or wrap is thinner with less fibrous cushion. This means it will trap less dirt and rinse out more easily. However, the compaction from standing and sliding on the fabric for a prolonged period of time throughout the day drives soiling deep into the fabric of the towel, making it equally difficult to clean. That said, if you're looking for something that doesn't matter in appearance, and rinses more easily with less water time and scrubbing, a linen wrap is absolutely the best choice.

You could probably make one with a tortilla of flat bread too.

Foot wraps were clearly more comfortable for me as they are completely loose with some layer of air between the foot and cloth. And they can be used without washing much longer while constantly being dry by just wrapping them differently - the wet sole part goes on top and dries.
But I still wear socks as they are good enough with less hassle. Socks give you 80% effect at 20% effort.

Manufacturers, accountants, and quartermasters would disagree.

Mind you footwraps were an idea imported from Europe into Russia. Specifically, Peter the Great (manlet autist, what is it with Russian rulers and manlets?) copied many practices in order to modernize ass-backwards imperial Russia, and footwraps were taken from when the Swedish Empire when it was at its height and kicking everyone's ass. Footwraps was an actual improvement at the time.

Centuries later Russia is still ass-backwards, but at least they moved up to footwraps and are no longer raw-dogging bast sandals on long marches.

Never used them. I guess the advantages are that they would dry quickly after washing and that they're a little like wrapping your hands for boxing. Wrapped hands are definitely more sturdy than ones naked in gloves. You can probably take impacts better.

personally, i think footwraps are probably better than socks, but only if you had a proper dedicated construction for it
like a really nice wool, a good weave pattern, and different shape than just a square

other than that, socks are king since they're everywhere for cheap

Worse than socks but better than rawdogging a boot.
Pretty nifty trick is to put a foot wrap on top of sock to prevent chafing if you need to walk a long distances in rubber boots.

Socks are manufactured in factories by machines that take thread and make them into socks the exact same way your foot wrap is made, only with less material wasted.
Not a single sock you have worn in the last 20 years used human labor for manufacture.

Foot wraps are more expensive than socks since they use more material.

If you're doing lrp, moving long distances throug rocky terrain, or hiking for two weeks straight foot wraps are better
foot wraps get a bad rep because most foot wraps are from slavs (i.e. shit) and you need specific training to use foot wraps to their full potential with the hundred different wrap styles ranging from increasing sole support (for sharp, rocky terrain) to reducing pressure on a blistered or bruised area
in the modern era foot wraps are hyper specialist equipment for extreme or no logistics conditions and nobody on this board will ever benefit from them
