>The U.S. Army took a step toward integrating killer drones into its battlefield tactics after it dropped live grenades from the air at a training area in Germany this week.
>Members of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Tennessee Army National Guard on Wednesday became the first conventional soldiers to detonate an M67 fragmentation grenade from a drone-borne dropper, Army officials on site said.
>The plastic device, known as Audible, was attached to the undercarriage of a Skydio X10D drone that attacked a simulated vehicle convoy at the Grafenwoehr Training Area.
>On Wednesday, 1st Lt. David Baker checked Audible’s dropper device. He then attached a hand grenade, making sure the pin was in the correct position to be pulled. He removed the safety clip and the drone was airborne.
The US has finally caught up with early 2022 quadcopter drone warfare:

Dude... lol... the US Has killed MILLIONS of civilians when you combine WW1, WW2, Japan, Iraq war, etc. Do you really think bombing a few non pozzed American defenders in the future and further innocents around the world even matters to us anymore? This is pretty tame by comparison to shit we've done. That being said warfare is so gay. As if turning it into vidyea isnt gay enough, wait until AI takes over it. They'll pin herpic war medals on the guy who serviced/refueled the kill bot. And he'll probably claim PTSD too

This seems equal parts not newsworthy, and also not something you would want to broadcast openly. Like grenade drops were old news 5 years ago, so its not remarkable tech, and at the same time to be adopting grenade quadrotors is a tacit admission that the thirdies were right and US drones are bloated overpriced shit.

quadcopter drones and recon UAVs dont do the same job

a quadcopter drone is just a way to throw a grenade further and more accurately and is meant to be used directly by an infantry company
a UAV is a long range, long endurance, vehicle with advanced sensor suites

it is not meant to hit someone 2km away in a tactical situation
it is meant to fly dozens of kilometers away, for hours at a time, and observe enemy positions with all-weather multispectrum cameras

its like saying you dont need the U2 spy plane is overpriced because they just invented binoculars

the switchblade isnt a drone and it does not serve the same mission either
its a loitering munition meant to stay in the air for a prolonged period of time before any targets are designated
whereas quadcopter drones lack the endurance for such a mission and will be armed and launched with the expectation of finding a target right after launch

The point is, Americans were facing grenade drones in Syria back in like 2015 and have been utilizing drones since the 80s; they should have had early adopters advantage. Instead they memory holed them for half a decade, continuing to throw money into the switchblade black hole until their inferiority was undeniable. Its embarrassing, it would be like if the Houthis built a 7th gen fighter or North Korea developed cold fusion, Americans should simply not be behind the ball on this shit.

This guy gets it. Having the switchblade doesn't mean you dont need a cheap drone for lobbing grenades or vice versa. The switchblade can be used for more time critical missions where the margin of error is small (like killing an VIP/officer) wheras POV/nade drones can be used to harass regular advancing infantry where if you miss, it does not really affect the mission in any meaningful way, you just send another or use something else.

There were tons of European, American and Israeli drone designs. The only difference is that quadcopters have a mass commercial manufacturing base making them cheaper.
Before the mass production part of the market appeared they were no less expensive than military drones of the era.

The switchblade is a closer equivalent to FPV drones dipshit, and it was generally successful but it doesn't fit the mission profile in Ukraine.

The switchblades 300 and 600 are more of a bridge between an fpv drone and a javelin. They are much more capable than an fpv but not powerful enough to replace an ATGM. They are meant for units in a combined arms scenario to have critical strike capabilities, not to be as cheap and ubiquitous as possible, ie kill an artillery crew or command unit or supply vehicle or mission critical target of any kind without having to pass it up the chain to a n asset with a queue and a wait time.

Grenade drop drones existed in Syria, they are going on for a decade old. But Ukraines mass use of them got more attention since western militaries are directly integrated and training with them.
They have been slow to adopt them themselves because health and safety/manuals and training requirements all strangle the fuck of out peacetime innovation. British military has a strict 'don't make any modifications or attatch anything at all' to its drones. The French seem a lot more open to it.
