Compenstators
Why aren't they more popular? They seem like they are net gain with no downsides.

Making the gun bigger is counterproductive for CC, and you do see them in competition.

most holsters arent built to acommodate comps

They have a very unfortunate name, since people immediately make the connection that this guy wants his gun to look bigger to compensate for his tiny dick.

holster compatibility
more annoying to clean
most importantly though: depending on the comp, you may have reliability/cycling issues; gun might need a different spring

And I was just thinking that the movie is kind of impressive how it steers her through the whole thing without a complete loss of innocence, despite flirting with the idea repeatedly, she never shoots anyone and ends the movie as a little girl going to school.

Try to reholster it after shooting it. Gonna suck a nut if appendix carry.

Nonstarter on CC guns, but there’s hardly a downside for open carry. Most weaponlights overhang the muzzle by about an inch on Glock 19 sized guns anyways, you’re not adding any extra length with a compensator. Not than an inch even matters, given the immense benefit of reduced muzzle flip.

Did you mean no upsides? They are pointless on a pistol that isn’t a full auto pdw and even then they don’t make that big of a difference. The only place you see these are in competitions because >people think these make their gun look cooler even though it makes them look gayer, but that’s because any >person with a “race gun” with a compensator is a massive faggot anyway.

Your premise is false, it's typical for compensators to significantly reduce reliability of a handgun. The norm is for you to need to adjust at least your recoil spring weight to get them to run reliably. There are some good options on the market these days where that typically isn't the case like the radian barrel/comp combo and the parker mountain machine one. They also are kind of annoying maintenance wise, you have to take them off to strip the gun, and carbon lock is a thing with them too. Add on to that how many comps are poorly designed and have to be pretty big to be decently effective and it makes sense that they haven't been very popular for carry guns. None of that is to say they're a bad idea in the current year as long as you get a good one.
>T. Carry a G19 with a radian barrel/comp
>>63916747
Not always the case, there is such a thing as too long but a comped compact sized handgun isn't over the line IMO, also more slide length actually provides better leverage on the grip helping to keep it tucked closer to your body.
>>63916761
Pretty easy fix for the smaller ones, just take a hot butter knife and open up the bottom of the holster enough to let the comp slide through, worked fine for me.
>>63917424
Not really a problem unless you fire dozens of rounds and give it zero chance to cool off, I IWB mine to and from the range.
>>63917606
It doesn't sound like you have actual experience with them. I get a 25-30% recoil reduction which is VERY noticeable. Feels more like you're shooting a .380 instead of 9mm.
Anonymous No.63917651 [Report]
Once you learn how to actually shoot you quickly discover outside of small carry guns and expensive race guns comps are generally a waste of money and offer very little return.

Never fired a few rounds and quickly reholster to scoot on out before cops show up huh?

The boomers were right, it's GAY and CRINGE. There is no justifiable self defense scenario where you would need a light.

I think a compensator for most guns is a bandaid on a skill issue. Your better off spending the money buying ammo and practicing for the recoil on a lot of things than trying to add equipment to deal with it.

There are a few cases where a compensator or brake makes sense.. but they’re generally edge cases and had a bit more thought put into them than “let’s slap a comp on it..”
Anonymous No.63919400 [Report]
>>63916744 (OP)
just depends on the gun, as rifles commonly have them
pistols don't because of a mix of price, size, and comfort
plus, taking apart the average pistol thats got a comp on sucks ass, which is unironically a legit reason not to have one

So if you acknowledge that a compensator helps people shoot better, for a self defense pistol, assuming the correct springs are used and it’s a reliable gun, why NOT have a compensator?

Let’s look at ported pistols, no additional size, no reliability change due to no additional mass, why not have a ported pistol for self defense if they make you shoot better?

Reportedly ported barrels and slide accumulate pocket lint and can decrease reliability. I carry and P365 SAS and kind of wish I had the ported version to compare tbqh fampai. The fiber optic at least gets dirty as fuck and actually unusable without a frequent compressed gas spray
Anonymous No.63919958 [Report]

I think that falls under the “they took time to design it” label rather than the “they slapped something on it.

>for a self defense pistol, assuming the correct springs are used and it’s a reliable gun, why NOT have a compensator?
as a couple of other people have already mentioned, they're extra loud, and you won't have your hearing protection on in a defensive scenario. and as far as self defense pistols go, particularly with comp'd micro pistols, they don't do as much as you'd think for recoil reduction and a lot of that just has to do with the size of the handgun being an inherently flippy platform.

This plus we are talking about the average 9mm Glock or the like, not exactly a beast. I took a class and this guy had one on his home brew Glock and it malfunctioned all day.
