could you do BVR using Infrared sighting?

IR is visual, it's just a shorter wavelength that happens to be easier to spot against a background.
BVR is shorthand for beyond visual range, using radar which is a longer wavelength.

Mate i mean no harm.
Im rrally trying my best to help the conversation on BVR since last time i heard you couldnt sight things that far using thermals according to this board.

a detect is not a target lock. You fire a Meteor from that far away, your CO is going to surgically graft you a new asshole for wasting a 1 million euro missile.

I mean you can but only under perfect circumstances. The tiniest ammount of moisture, heat variation or cloud makes IR targeting impossible at ranges further than like 15km, hence why the Eurofighter has a radar too.

Infrared sighting doesn't give you range. It's more for warning you when you should be turning your radar on if you're flying under emcon for some reason or another.

It's because of this pic rel.
We spot other planes with black body radiation that all objects that are warm emit, but this type of IR also gets absorbed by moisture and the atmosphere unless the conditions are really good.
Blackbody radiation is amazing for spotting things because the background is usually very monocolor even in darkness, and even small amounts of IR emissions, or even lack of, stands out against a mono background of the sky.
I'll post another image in a moment showing the windows of wavelengths that light can pass through, which is also the reason we use radar, and is also the reason we as larger animals evolved the visual optics we use today (insects and night animals operate at smaller scales and at night, atmospheric interference is less of an issue at that scale and night sight more important and thus they use wider spectrums.)

Other image I mentioned. Atmospheric light windows (these windows can also open and close dependant on weather)

The aim-97 seek bat missile was designed to be guided by the plane that lauched it and to use an infrared sensor for terminal guidance. So in theory you could do BVR with just infrared sighting, the problem is that it's more dependent on weather conditions than radar.

F-35 squadron share data with AI data link so their combined radar is one big mofo thus BVR is actually working. You have one with SAAB too but they decided not to invest in stealth.
