No, the A4 perfected the M16 by allowing use of either the carry handle irons or flat top mounted optics. As well as improvements over the A1 like the hand guards, barrel, and 3 round burst. Some would say the M4 perfected the AR design but it serves a different purpose. The latest M4s are fantastic rifles.

It was never the perfect rifle dipshit. Soldiers had problems cleaning them, the mag was designed to be thrown away, and I've heard a vietnam vet prefer the AK because the M16A1 felt like a toy. Wrong. The A4 sights are the same as the A2 ones which were designed for target practice at the range not real warfare. It's also well accepted that the 3 round burst feature is useless. There are also no "latest m4s". They're old and being replaced now by the fat waste of money M7 rifle.
