M4 I've been sketching as part of a Punisher drawing that I want to paint over later. bit of a pain as I had to rely on old super low res supplementary material from an ARMS instruction manual, don't think I've ever seen anyone use this handguard with the M203 mount in the wild

Has blender gotten any better for real world measurements? Last I heard they had "blender units" but every time I look back over at Blender it seems 16 updates have occured and the UI is completely different. I really wish there was a slightly more advanced Google Sketchup with some semi-CAD features but that'll never happen. Being able to modify every last polygon and connection point to be exactly where you want it and the ability to flip faces (interior/exterior) makes that program like no other. I just struggle to make models with much detail like threads and rounded edges (interior or exterior). The "follow path" tool can only handle so much and it often gets confused.

i'm not using real measurements; i put schematics as a background and trace over them with the mesh lol. I'm not using your workflow of curve modelling. I start with a primitive and use booleans to "carve" the features, and then editing the mesh (move, scale, extrude, etc) as you normally would for certain details. Rounded parts are just ctrl B bevels lol or scaled circles.

Damn. Every now and then I hear these hints of maybe Blender will become more CAD friendly or years ago of some add-ons to add measurements or conversions from blender unit to inches/mm but who knows; I so rarely look it may already be reality. I like Sketchup for printing random parts as every last node can be moved to exact positions and you straight up draw new edges and divide surfaces how you want. Horrible for anything organically shaped. Blender is great for organic shapes but I know I'll be able to rough scale at best, so it's more of a program for art and sculptures you can then print for me. You can get a plugin for sketchup to import STLs (?) but it got confused with blender exported STLs half the time and refused to open them. Like I said, Sketchup+ I'd love. But nothing has lifetime licenses anymore so almost no matter what I'm fucked.

yeah I'm not sure if ARMS ever actually sold it in any quantities, like I said the only place I could find it was within one of their manuals; love the look of those old Blackwater gats (and MW2 of course) but figured it'd be weird for Punisher not to have the ol M203 underslung and was curious if the aforementioned MW2 model was accurate

I am making the LMT Rahe 20. First I always go to the manufacturer website and download the images from there. I save the images for the full rifle, then get a parts list of all the subcomponents and get pictures from their manufacturer website. Then i look up references from google images as needed and i always watch the forgotten weapons/small arms solutions/Jonathan Ferguson ("keeper of firearms and artillery at the royal armouries museum in the UK, which houses..." etc) to get views of the gun from oblique angles and zoom ins on particular details. Schematics i get from googling "[thing] dimensions"

Here. I really need to do some more now that I have the hundred-some pack of Crayola pencils that's less than $20 from Walmart. That's a fucking steal IMO. Crayola gets a lot of hate but they're cheap and have improved many products over the last 20 years. They also seem to do pretty good in lightfastness comparisons even against some more expensive pencils. Nothing crazy but for the price, feel/quality, and color range? God damn. I just suck when it comes to color and texture; straight pencil sketch with shading I have down pretty good.

Yeah I just need to practice. I rarely draw anymore and when I did, I rarely got to practice doing quality/semi-realistic texture in colored pencil. We never really got to do much of that in any art class, that's for sure. Always pencil or paint. I recall one whole project we did in pencil with no warmup sketch/test pieces other than extremely basic blending/color theory shit, so I can do very little when it comes to texture.

More /ak/ than typical art, but I always liked guns since I was a teen. I liked the idea of anime chicks in a kit that matches their style/power, pic related.
GFL caught my eye with their raifu-bait, they got just about every niche gun developed weebified, but the Chinese are gonna Chinese and just double down on anime tiddies.
