Automatic yes if you live in a ban state, or if you just specifically want an M14/M1A or clone build in your collection. If not, then:
>do you have a particular need for a .308 semi-automatic rifle
>will you pay 50% more or greater than the price of an AR-10 or G3
>will you pay equal to or greater than the price of a FAL or M77
>do you want a traditionally stocked rifle
>are you willing to buy and use specialized cleaning tools and ammo
>are you ok with lesser/more difficult optic mounting solutions and accuracy
you have to answer yes to all of these to want an M14.

I prefer the M1A to the Ar10 in every way. Particularly the balance in wood furniture. Im more accurate with it kneeling, standing. I have quicker follow up shots. I am more comfortable with the setup. I had the good fortune to be able to use them side by side in multiple lengths. Every one i prefer the M1A. That said one of the M1As i tested had a composite stock with rails and was a lot lighter and I did not like that one at all. I prefer the M1a in use to any of the usual suspects when it comes to battle rifles. I think it gets a bad rap due to moisture issues when the m14 was in the jungle.

Look, I'm as big a FAL fanboy as it gets, but the M14/M1A has something going for it that the FAL can't match, and it's accuracy. The duel locking lug up at the breach rather than a single at the ass end of the bolt makes the M14 a hell of a lot more accurate. FAL is more reliable and has better handling.

This it's shit. I owned an SEI which is basically as good as you can get sans an LRB or original TRW so it's not a lemon issue. The gun just isn't fund to shoot. It's awkward and heavy af.

There are better tree-ol-hate rifles anon, if you want it for the history fine but if you want it for a practical battle rifle then just save up for a G3, Scar H plus mandatory Spuhr stock upgrade, or any decent AR18 for that matter instead.
Personally if I was gonna get a shitty battle I'd get a FAL but different strokes for different folks.

>lousy bedding method
>fragile handguard
>rear sight can be easily deranged/knocked loose
>front sight WILL be deranged/knocked loose
>hopefully the flash hider is reamed to nm dimensions, if not watch for muzzle strikes
>wandering zero for several reasons, we can go over them in detail while we're troubleshooting
>watch your bullet weights, it'll let you know if you made a mistake
>goddamn magazines are heavy as shit, but at least that comes with a benefit
>wood stock is for display only, or that's another wandering zero we'll have to figure out
>shitty ones are expensive, well made ones are very expensive
>can be made accurate (for a time) by someone who knows what they're doing but it's a bit of an art, it will shoot itself loose fairly quickly, and a match conditioned m14 is no longer fit for service as a service rifle
>scope mounting method is hokie as fuck

Other than that, they're not bad for a rifle from the fifties.
>yep, it's armorerfag again, you called and I answered!

It's the only gun I've ever gotten buyers remorse from. If you got money burning a hole in your pocket sure go for it but you'd be better off just saving your money and getting some ammo and a 30 rack of your favorite beer.

I've got nothing. I own a nice 1944 Inland re-import, but that hardly makes me an expert. When I complain about the M14, it's based on many, many thousands of rounds shot, and literally hundreds of rifles carried and worked on. Someone's going to chime in and tell me that I'm full of shit, but these things were still commonly issued 20 years ago. I've even shot lines with these things.

With the M1 carbine, I'm just another jackoff that puts a few hundred rounds through one every year. My opinion is positive, but it's casual.

Get a FAL or G3 Cetme.
If you just want a .308 rifle get any old AR10.
If you like the style either get a CMP garand in .308 or a Mini-14.

I will not. I genuinely enjoyed it having owned several examples of the big 3 battle rifles. Overall, the G3/HK91/PTR91 is the best (IMO) but I preferred my M1A over the FAL for its accuracy and sights. With that said, its annoying rocking in mags.

>wanting an ancient cold war battle rifle for accuracy
Just get literally any decent modern bolt action rifle in 308 for half the coast of the rifle and magazines then put those saved dollars into some decent American or Japanese glass plus more ammo.

What in your experience would it take to make the action, barrel and all, a rock solid performer and mitigate the problems you listed? Is it just endemic to the design, and if so, why? Did the Garand have these problems, if no, why not? I'd really like an armorers deep dive on the inherent design flaws of the system and possible solutions that could theoretically mitigate those.

Garbage rod of the West with none of the quirkiness or price point of the mosin. (rip cheap nuggets
Do you like:
>failure to feed
>failure to extract
>magazines that don't work
>magazines that makes the gun malfunction
>6 MOA accuracy
>bad headspacing
>loose parts and terrible fit and finish
>heavy as a motherfucker
You will pay out the ass for something that is heavier than an AK, less accurate than most AKs, costs more than most AKs, and more finicky than a saturday night special. (I'm not saying buy an AK instead, I'm just using it as an example.) Unless you really, really, *really* enjoy how it looks or the history behind it, do not get it. They are expensive and terrible; there are plenty of cool .308s out there that don't suck.
