Kershaw Blur pros and cons?
>>63951161Slim, light, modern, it doesn't play around with serrations you'll never use. 14C28N stainless, which is apparently very popular for budget options at the moment. They say it takes a good edge, but I've never actually worked with it.
Last year I barely knew which part of a knife was the pointy part. Then I needed a knife for my garage. Watched some youtubes. Half a year later I'm a knife steel expert, own probably ten Spydercos, and another ten Kershaws, Civivis, etc. and at least $2000 poorer, and itching to get more. Why? Why does this happen?

>>63951243How do you like the Avispa?
>>63951200I getcha. One day dad comes back from a work trip in southeast asia and gives me a shitty tourist knife from the open air market. Twenty years later he wonders where he fucked up when I have multiple folders in a shoebox and fixed blades stored in a giant empty restaurant tin can that used to hold butterscotch pudding.
I haven't even told him about the machetes.
>>63951787Why? Pocket fixed blades with the proper sheath are great

>>63951787>Otter vs Douk?I've only ever used Douk-Douk, but I hear Otter's K55K is really solid and that people love the locking mechanism. Really want to get one someday.
Douk-Douk doesn't have a locking mechanism. Instead, they use what was described in the 1920's as a "strong backspring," and it absolutely feels like it. It's the strongest backspring friction-folder I've ever had. Never thought I would like it so much, but it's my personal favorite now. Full hollow-grind, XC75 carbon steel, it's just perfect for everything and it cuts like a razor.
>>63951200>needs a knife>goes to YouTubeYou got sold on a product instead of doing your own research. You fell for the marketing. You fell for it again. >>63952213>>63951787My gf stole my Mercator K55K (she loves cats) so now I EDC my Douk-Douk Sorcier. The Mercator is nicer overall, but the Douk-Douk is perfectly fine for a pocket knife.

>>63951123 (OP)>Fixed or folding?Why not both?

might be a bit thicker that what you think when you hear rat but fulltang cant be that type of stacked leather handle
theres no way its fulltang
i should point out just cause its rattail doesnt mean its garbage.
both of these qualify as rattrail
the one on the left is perfectly valid for real use.
>>63954221>>63954274Thanks a lot! I was worried that "rat-tail" meant "garbage." I'm not like slamming this knife around at a worksite or hunting bears with it, I just want a nice knife that can perform basic tasks. If the stacked leather is fucked, I might just take it apart and do a custom handle with juniper or boxwood or something.

Does anyone make an Italian stiletto switch blad like pic related that isn't a piece of junk? This was a Frank Beltrame and the blade was crap and the spring eventually broke, but it was a fun knife to play with. I prefer the bayonet style blade, but a dagger or drop point or whatever might be OK. I just don't want a Kris. Black scales are a must.

The sellers store disappeared the day after I placed the order. I thought for sure I got scammed, but it surprisingly arrived about 2 weeks later.
Just keep looking and maybe you'll get lucky. If you find one and don't mind risking a few $, order one as soon as you see it.
on the 4th of july i had this knife fall out of my pocket in some tall grass while walking and it's totally gone. i looked around with a flashlight for like 45 minutes.
it's not even a great knife or anything. meyerco wharning. it was like 25$ when it was new. but, i really like the way the blade looks and there's like nothing that is going to be the same.
it was a spring assist which i thought was pretty retarded at first, but the spring was so strong on this it was practically a switchblade. like, if you closed it a little and let go, it would lock itself back. it would open really violently which was cool.
looking at replacements, there's really nothing that has this sort of look, which is insane to me. i'm considering buying an automatic wharncliffe with a close-enough blade look, and just grinding the back down flat.

>>63958981>>63959060I don't understand why you would want a large knife with a mechanism like that. A knife that big gets swung around a lot, because you'll probably use it for gardening or hiking.
>>63959556See that brown stuff on the stamp? I thought it was rust, but when I saw that it was from Pakistan, I knew that it was just caked-on feces.
>>63951243Microtech Amphibian. If you polish the pivoting/locking surfaces yourself you can get it turbo nice. 1 hand opening, could be 1 hand closing as well but the locking tabs are 1mm too narrow IMO. Good recurve blade.
>inb4 ball bearings yes, it does but they really aren't the key to everything and desu the locking wedge and spring pressing against the back curve of the blade as it opens are far more the friction surfaces to care about. It has a G10 and aluminum version. I have the aluminum one. It is a solid solid fucking knife that fits my hand almost perfectly. It is tip up carry but the handle is incredibly robust and the tip is well hidden in the channel. Outside of me being autistic about wanting a more glass-smooth opening (personally would offset the blade so that the locking wedge makes contact initially and again towards the end with the lower screw/bolt having a nice precision machined washer over it the curve would ride against making it open much more smoothly), this feels like a much more durable version of the Benchmade Bedlam. https://eknives.com/microtech/microtech-amphibian/Picrel is it disassembled down to bare components. You get your standard options for blade finishes. Pocket clip even despite tip up is really solid. It is the only Microtech I own that actually feels like a workhorse and not a show pony and I say that well aware of the dumb shit I normally like.
>>63959614Thought I posted the photo hold on my bad
>>63959574Elongation knives like that are/were used for hunting not gardening, so no swinging around. For a lot of purposes the short blade was sufficient, folding it out to full size was for things like dispatching a wounded animal.

>>63977022now I've never bayonetted anyone or anything, but the high angle of that tip isn't ideal for stabbing, even though stabbing is the number 1 important thing a bayonet needs to do as a bayonet.
Compare it to something like a KM2000, which has an "american tanto" shape too but a much lower angle to the tip. the new model even gives it a swedge to bring the tip closer to the middle of the blade, and that same blade is actually used in the SG2000 bayonet that the French adopted.

>>63977614>>63979821the SG2000 and SG2000WC (stands for wirecutter, it's got that hole in the blade for an ak-style wire cutter on the sheath) mount on the G36, have their blade one way around and blades are 3.6mm thick, whereas the French SG2000WC-F has its blade the other way round, mounts on the HK416 and is even thicker at 5mm to meet the french requirements.
note that these are bayonets first and foremost, far as i know the blade steel is a 55Si7 spring steel hardened to 53HRC for maximum robustness, able to be bent severely without breaking or permanently deforming. I doubt that's ideal for edge holding if it's mainly a cutting tool you want.

>>63982824It's a good solid knife, one of the first I owned.
Absolutely something you could carry daily if the somewhat large size isnt a problem. But I simply cannot support spydercos pricing these days. When I bough mine it was like 27 bucks, for which it's a nice one. Made in china, but solid and with a good enough steel. But now the MSRP is 53, and on BHQ youll get it for like 40. its inching ever closer to the price a proper Endura used to be.
>>63983164if youre gonna get a meadowlark might as well get a Ganzo 759 instead. just as solid, similar, perhaps slightly better steel 440C, identical size. i'm 99% sure these are made in the same factory. Here's a comparison. The one thing the Byrd might have over the Ganzo is the shape of hole but that's personal preference.
But it costs like 18 bucks from Ganzo directly and i've seen it sold elsewhere as low as 12.
Spyderco design and quality control may be good, and I normally dont support shameless copies, but i dont want to put up with an up to 200% surcharge either.
>>63984999Ganzo makes some pretty decent chinkshit, I can vouch for them. I wish they'd offer better steel, but their quality overall is nice and it feels good having a nearly disposable knife.

They say that the metal is soft and over all the knife feels very cheap. What's confusing to me is that it was always cheap. That was the point which is why it was just a sharp thing that rode around in my pocket. My question for anyone who has experience with the recent versions of this, or just modern Gerber in general, is this thing really shit now? Well made in all regards, solid lockup, decent steel (440C, not mind-blowing these days but a solid allrounder nonetheless). comes with a leather sheath. the large one has the same length blade as a Buck 110 but is 20% lighter due to being less thick overall. nice walnut wood scales. personally I think I'd prefer the walthers stainless handle to buck's brass because it won't tarnish.

>>63951123 (OP)Went down the rabbit hole of plastic 'knives'.. They have dagger looking boot 'knives' and the venerable kabar 'tactical spork' and even a hairbrush with a shank inside.
The brush is a weapon should anyone discover the secret. The boot 'daggers' as well. Only the 'tactical spork' has a 'legitimate' use - it really is for eating.
But even a pocket knife or a box cutter has 'legitimate' uses, such as cutting boxes. It's not 'weapony'. A fixed blade knife is going to be long and therefore hard to fit in a pocket.
And a metal knife will set off a metal detector.
I once bought a cheap ceramic kitchen knife. I wondered do they make these for EDC?
THEY DO. Now for self defense, the blade is likely to chip and break. The plastic shank ones may actually be superior and more reliable. But, the plastic ones won't cut things. They would wear out quickly or not work at all for cutting boxes, which helps justify even having it for EDC.
Only the 'tactical spork' makes sense but then only if you need to carry eating utensils as EDC, which nobody does because the utensils tend to be available where food is available unless you are camping or picnicing.
But there are many fixed blade 'weapony' ceramic blades available. and they make ceramic disposable box cutter blades. And I saw one or two supposedly ceramic folding locking blade knives.
Now we're getting close. The fixed blades are out because they are too long to fit in pocket. And every other option seemed to have metal parts in the handle such as screws and springs so they are out.
Is there a foldable edc with a ceramic blade that can be used for utiliy tasks and self defense which has no metal parts and looks more tooley than weapony and fits in a pocket easily?
A fully plastic box cutter that takes standard blades would be nice - you can change the blades when they chip and shatter,
A folding lock back knife would also be good if it had no metal pieces and was strong. Baby it tho..
>>64007853ceramic utility blades exist, and one can 3d print a variety of holders, be it fixed or folding/automatic as described in
>>64000970. But honestly I struggle to see much non-nefarious use for this sort of thing, usually when there's a metal detector it's there for good reason.
Most durable is probably cutting and grinding G10 into a knife shape. Ceramic utility blades and printed holders won't hold up to hard use most likely, so the most everyday tool is the kabar spork. As for why one might carry one, it's always good to have utensils on you. often times disposable stuff is tiny and may break, and also it allows you to buy stuff you normally couldn't eat on the go, like yogurt or tuna cans.

>>64022760it appears to be a victorinox classic. more up-close, high res photos of any text on the blade would be appreciated.
the estimations of
>>64022788 and
>>64022788 are wrong, provided the markings do designate it a real brand. I don't think it's missing parts, and that is simply an old style of tweezers with a metal end instead of plastic, please provide another image to check.
the blade says Hoffritz, which was a NY-based cutlery shop /importer (of SAKs and more) that closed down in 1993.
Since it has horn scales (which is uncommon for victorinox) I'd estimate it's easily worth $50, maybe $100. depending on rarity and condition. maybe it's worth more than that if the writing and horn make it extra rare.
what I find unusual is that the horn scales incorporate space for tweezers and hide the rivets, the 58mm vics with horn scales I've seen had visible pins and no space for the tweezer.
in any case, don't use it, keep it as a collectors piece since it seems to be in good condition still.
I recommend asking on bladeforums or reddit, there's entire subforums dedicated to nerding out over SAKs so they'll surely be able to tell you more than I can.
My chinesium shitknife. It's really sturdy and well put together, but has the edge retention of sharp cheddar.
>>64024265This post was so good, its not my knife and now I want to know more too.
>>64022050You're in luck
>>https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Knives--1623#/filter:opener:Wave+OpenerNot sure if Emerson limited the license to a handful of other companies, or if the patents just expired, or if Emerson shutting down production means it's just fair game
>>64027266>Two pages of in stock karambits and balisongs>Some karambits that identify as tantos>One brand using cheapo steel>That single Kershaw>A whole bunch of out of stock Emerson brand Emerson opener knivesFunny, I don't feel lucky. There must still be some kind of legal shenanigans going here, otherwise I don't see why everyone and their mother isn't using the system or something like it on practically every folder. Just imagine how fun an axis lock knife with an Emerson opener would be.
>>64027350>I don't see why everyone and their mother isn't using the systemIt's patented, so everyone who wants to put it on their knife has to pay Ernest Emerson to use it.

or get a spyderco and just attach a ziptie to the spyderhole
>>63951123 (OP)Hello Douk Douk friend!
Here is an รcureuil a friend sold me for some change because giving a knife away as a present is considered bad luck.
>>64027958And here is a testament to it's sharpness.

>>64027964Nise stitches, unironically good work. Now rub some dirt on it and go play!
>>64027815Now we're talking. I really have to appreciate the simplicity of a zip tie on the thumb hole, I'll have to try that out.
