Slim, light, modern, it doesn't play around with serrations you'll never use. 14C28N stainless, which is apparently very popular for budget options at the moment. They say it takes a good edge, but I've never actually worked with it.

Last year I barely knew which part of a knife was the pointy part. Then I needed a knife for my garage. Watched some youtubes. Half a year later I'm a knife steel expert, own probably ten Spydercos, and another ten Kershaws, Civivis, etc. and at least $2000 poorer, and itching to get more. Why? Why does this happen?

recommend a "hard use" folder that isnt a meme
>no cold steel (dont like the lock)
>no structural polymer or similar scales (e.g. the ultimate meme: strider)
>no ball bearings (zt, new hinderer)
>manual (easily disabled spring assisted gets a pass)
>blade shape that isnt impossible to properly sharpen
>no retarded secondary lock (crkt m16)
>no loose as shit chink pocketclip and tipup carry
>actually in stock in a few places
budget of 500 or less
the greatest knives ever are the delica and endura btw (used to be before they got retarded expensive)

I getcha. One day dad comes back from a work trip in southeast asia and gives me a shitty tourist knife from the open air market. Twenty years later he wonders where he fucked up when I have multiple folders in a shoebox and fixed blades stored in a giant empty restaurant tin can that used to hold butterscotch pudding.

I haven't even told him about the machetes.

>Otter vs Douk?
I've only ever used Douk-Douk, but I hear Otter's K55K is really solid and that people love the locking mechanism. Really want to get one someday.
Douk-Douk doesn't have a locking mechanism. Instead, they use what was described in the 1920's as a "strong backspring," and it absolutely feels like it. It's the strongest backspring friction-folder I've ever had. Never thought I would like it so much, but it's my personal favorite now. Full hollow-grind, XC75 carbon steel, it's just perfect for everything and it cuts like a razor.

You got sold on a product instead of doing your own research. You fell for the marketing. You fell for it again. You fell for it so many times bladehq employees have your address memorized. Japanese whetstone retailers can sense the exact moment you scroll over their wares. A baby just born yesterday already has his fate sealed as a knifemaker because of you.

Thanks a lot! I was worried that "rat-tail" meant "garbage." I'm not like slamming this knife around at a worksite or hunting bears with it, I just want a nice knife that can perform basic tasks. If the stacked leather is fucked, I might just take it apart and do a custom handle with juniper or boxwood or something.

Does anyone make an Italian stiletto switch blad like pic related that isn't a piece of junk? This was a Frank Beltrame and the blade was crap and the spring eventually broke, but it was a fun knife to play with. I prefer the bayonet style blade, but a dagger or drop point or whatever might be OK. I just don't want a Kris. Black scales are a must.
Any links would be appreciated.

I wish I could help you. I got it a few months ago. I think otfs are against Temus ToS because they are very hard to find on there. I saw a few benchmade counterfeits at the time, but only ever saw this single microtech knockoff.
The sellers store disappeared the day after I placed the order. I thought for sure I got scammed, but it surprisingly arrived about 2 weeks later.
Just keep looking and maybe you'll get lucky. If you find one and don't mind risking a few $, order one as soon as you see it.

on the 4th of july i had this knife fall out of my pocket in some tall grass while walking and it's totally gone. i looked around with a flashlight for like 45 minutes.
it's not even a great knife or anything. meyerco wharning. it was like 25$ when it was new. but, i really like the way the blade looks and there's like nothing that is going to be the same.

it was a spring assist which i thought was pretty retarded at first, but the spring was so strong on this it was practically a switchblade. like, if you closed it a little and let go, it would lock itself back. it would open really violently which was cool.

looking at replacements, there's really nothing that has this sort of look, which is insane to me. i'm considering buying an automatic wharncliffe with a close-enough blade look, and just grinding the back down flat.

Got a ridiculous deal on a real Laguiole knife! I can't believe people have been carrying these around for hundreds of years. Can someone tell me what the symbol on the handle means? Looks very old...

I don't understand why you would want a large knife with a mechanism like that. A knife that big gets swung around a lot, because you'll probably use it for gardening or hiking.

Microtech Amphibian. If you polish the pivoting/locking surfaces yourself you can get it turbo nice. 1 hand opening, could be 1 hand closing as well but the locking tabs are 1mm too narrow IMO. Good recurve blade.
>inb4 ball bearings yes, it does but they really aren't the key to everything and desu the locking wedge and spring pressing against the back curve of the blade as it opens are far more the friction surfaces to care about. It has a G10 and aluminum version. I have the aluminum one. It is a solid solid fucking knife that fits my hand almost perfectly. It is tip up carry but the handle is incredibly robust and the tip is well hidden in the channel. Outside of me being autistic about wanting a more glass-smooth opening (personally would offset the blade so that the locking wedge makes contact initially and again towards the end with the lower screw/bolt having a nice precision machined washer over it the curve would ride against making it open much more smoothly), this feels like a much more durable version of the Benchmade Bedlam. https://eknives.com/microtech/microtech-amphibian/

Picrel is it disassembled down to bare components. You get your standard options for blade finishes. Pocket clip even despite tip up is really solid. It is the only Microtech I own that actually feels like a workhorse and not a show pony and I say that well aware of the dumb shit I normally like.

Elongation knives like that are/were used for hunting not gardening, so no swinging around. For a lot of purposes the short blade was sufficient, folding it out to full size was for things like dispatching a wounded animal.

Stone is generally too rigid and heavy to be an effective handle, you drop it one time and it's going to shatter. That being said, there are decorative and sometimes functional knives that utilize jade, or nephrite on cheaper ones. You can also infuse lapis lazuli powder into a phenolic resin or something.

Yes you can, though it's unlikely to be super impact resistant, (unless its made from stone chunks or powder with a resin filler). Look up Santa Fe Stoneworks, theyre quote prolific in this subject and make really cool custom spydercos with it.
Also, you can get a knife with a coprolite handle inlay right now from a different maker https://www.ebay.com/itm/177131364225

Anyone have an opinion on the Worksharp RMX? I stumbled across it and it looks interesting. I wouldn't need it for much more than light use but I like something quick to deploy without fumbling for my getting-stabbed-to-death LARP fantasies. My wave Endura is great for this but I'm bored with it and I've never had a button lock knife.

now I've never bayonetted anyone or anything, but the high angle of that tip isn't ideal for stabbing, even though stabbing is the number 1 important thing a bayonet needs to do as a bayonet.
Compare it to something like a KM2000, which has an "american tanto" shape too but a much lower angle to the tip. the new model even gives it a swedge to bring the tip closer to the middle of the blade, and that same blade is actually used in the SG2000 bayonet that the French adopted.

the SG2000 and SG2000WC (stands for wirecutter, it's got that hole in the blade for an ak-style wire cutter on the sheath) mount on the G36, have their blade one way around and blades are 3.6mm thick, whereas the French SG2000WC-F has its blade the other way round, mounts on the HK416 and is even thicker at 5mm to meet the french requirements.
note that these are bayonets first and foremost, far as i know the blade steel is a 55Si7 spring steel hardened to 53HRC for maximum robustness, able to be bent severely without breaking or permanently deforming. I doubt that's ideal for edge holding if it's mainly a cutting tool you want.

Half-serrated tanto Blur is the most useless folding knife I own. The older style "track tech" (trac-tech?) handle scale inserts are kind of neat, however...
>short straight edge of tanto tip + sub-1 inch straight edge belly section make it sub-par for cutting anything with the plain edge
>overly aggressive serrations
>ramped thumb studs are too close to the handle while folded to easily push against, and are sharp
>thumb studs are serrated and ramped, so if you try to thumb it open more with your nail it'll shred it
Aside from poking fine holes with the tip and maybe attempting Big Boss MGS3 CQC knife techniques to pull on clothing, it's basically a novelty knife.
The "wave" blade shape version would be much better (or any of the various shapes they may come in now)

It's a good solid knife, one of the first I owned.
Absolutely something you could carry daily if the somewhat large size isnt a problem. But I simply cannot support spydercos pricing these days. When I bough mine it was like 27 bucks, for which it's a nice one. Made in china, but solid and with a good enough steel. But now the MSRP is 53, and on BHQ youll get it for like 40. its inching ever closer to the price a proper Endura used to be.
>>63983164
if youre gonna get a meadowlark might as well get a Ganzo 759 instead. just as solid, similar, perhaps slightly better steel 440C, identical size. i'm 99% sure these are made in the same factory. Here's a comparison. The one thing the Byrd might have over the Ganzo is the shape of hole but that's personal preference.
But it costs like 18 bucks from Ganzo directly and i've seen it sold elsewhere as low as 12.
Spyderco design and quality control may be good, and I normally dont support shameless copies, but i dont want to put up with an up to 200% surcharge either.

hollow grind good, big bolts easy disassembly good, framelocks good, miusa good. beyond this they probably are just funko pops for republicans but w/e. they do perform well and i like them. i probably do just have boring taste but almost all my knives are relatively plain.

also desu they look designed by committee because everyone else copied chris reeves homework. spyderco still calls their titanium framelocks 'reeve integral lock' for a reason.

and in slightly schizo reasons, now is a good time to a buy a crk. secondary market prices are super low across the board, and crucible just went under, so now's probably the time to buy a magnacut crk if you want one.

I used to carry one of these all the time like 15 years ago. I was not nice to it and would use it to pry on things but it actually held up really well. Back then Gerber was a pretty good name. I have been wanting another one of these but I have been reading comments from people doing the same that it isn't the same knife anymore. They say that the metal is soft and over all the knife feels very cheap. What's confusing to me is that it was always cheap. That was the point which is why it was just a sharp thing that rode around in my pocket. My question for anyone who has experience with the recent versions of this, or just modern Gerber in general, is this thing really shit now? Is there a better brand that makes a cheap little spring assist like this?

>you need more?

Even this cheap chinese copy has been an exceptionally good knife, for over 2 decades I've had this and it is by far the best knife design I have used in my life, knuckle guard, metal pomell, full tang, metal sheath, top grip and funny moustache man symbol on it for big keks

But seriously, camp knife, scout knife, survival knife, combat knife

There is no superior choice and in your hearts you know I just won the thread

Gerber got bought by Fiskars and the quality dipped. It's still not a bad company, but the quality before the acquisition was a lot better. That said, I ordered one of their custom made folders for EDC and I have no complaints. I wouldn't use it for heavy duty work, but day to day stuff is just fine.

Not him but when Ontario went down it didn't occur to me to stock up on OKC3s until like 2 weeks later and by that time they were unobtainium. Now you can't even get Old Hickory stuff from the standard venues. It's such a goddamn shame, I was hoping Blue Ridge Knives could save the brand from the aerospace nerds that ruined it but with their relocation and being closed for like 2 fucking years now I'm losing hope.

Printed one today, this is so fun. like 90% of the fidgety fun of an OTF for not even $1 in plastic. He's even got variants you put utility blades in so it can actually cut stuff.
And the fact that you can just print out a couple plastic parts in an hour, put it together and it functions with its double-action mechanic just like it's supposed to (unlike most prints which are either decorative or useful, but "inert" objects) is amazing.

watched a review and to the reviewers (and my) surprise it appears to be a good one.
Well made in all regards, solid lockup, decent steel (440C, not mind-blowing these days but a solid allrounder nonetheless). comes with a leather sheath. the large one has the same length blade as a Buck 110 but is 20% lighter due to being less thick overall. nice walnut wood scales. personally I think I'd prefer the walthers stainless handle to buck's brass because it won't tarnish.
all in all solid, buy one if you want one, so long as you don't mind that it is (or rather was, apparently they're discontinued and starting to become harder to get) made in china.

You might want to look around and test a few other types of sheaths before buying a knife so you know what works best for you

Went down the rabbit hole of plastic 'knives'.. They have dagger looking boot 'knives' and the venerable kabar 'tactical spork' and even a hairbrush with a shank inside.

The brush is a weapon should anyone discover the secret. The boot 'daggers' as well. Only the 'tactical spork' has a 'legitimate' use - it really is for eating.

But even a pocket knife or a box cutter has 'legitimate' uses, such as cutting boxes. It's not 'weapony'. A fixed blade knife is going to be long and therefore hard to fit in a pocket.

And a metal knife will set off a metal detector.

I once bought a cheap ceramic kitchen knife. I wondered do they make these for EDC?

THEY DO. Now for self defense, the blade is likely to chip and break. The plastic shank ones may actually be superior and more reliable. But, the plastic ones won't cut things. They would wear out quickly or not work at all for cutting boxes, which helps justify even having it for EDC.

Only the 'tactical spork' makes sense but then only if you need to carry eating utensils as EDC, which nobody does because the utensils tend to be available where food is available unless you are camping or picnicing.

But there are many fixed blade 'weapony' ceramic blades available. and they make ceramic disposable box cutter blades. And I saw one or two supposedly ceramic folding locking blade knives.

Now we're getting close. The fixed blades are out because they are too long to fit in pocket. And every other option seemed to have metal parts in the handle such as screws and springs so they are out.

Is there a foldable edc with a ceramic blade that can be used for utiliy tasks and self defense which has no metal parts and looks more tooley than weapony and fits in a pocket easily?

A fully plastic box cutter that takes standard blades would be nice - you can change the blades when they chip and shatter,

A folding lock back knife would also be good if it had no metal pieces and was strong. Baby it tho..

ceramic utility blades exist, and one can 3d print a variety of holders, be it fixed or folding/automatic as described in >>64000970. But honestly I struggle to see much non-nefarious use for this sort of thing, usually when there's a metal detector it's there for good reason.
Most durable is probably cutting and grinding G10 into a knife shape. Ceramic utility blades and printed holders won't hold up to hard use most likely, so the most everyday tool is the kabar spork. As for why one might carry one, it's always good to have utensils on you. often times disposable stuff is tiny and may break, and also it allows you to buy stuff you normally couldn't eat on the go, like yogurt or tuna cans.

I would always choose a full-tang, fixed blade knife if I was relying on it for self defense. Thereโ€™s less that can go wrong and it will always be more dependable/tough depending on the blade steel. For defense against a human or animal, you really donโ€™t need anything more than 3โ€ imo. If you subscribe to the โ€œswitches and timersโ€ school of knife fighting, you really donโ€™t need more than 2โ€ against a human assailant. Pic related is my EDC blades. I often carry my Emerson tanto A-100 in my pocket, but I always have my Winkler Razorback concealed in my waist. That said, both of these knives exceed your budget, with the Winkler costing around $600.

Based fellow milwaukee fastback utility knife enthusiast.
I've never had a need for serrated blades.
Get pic related but be careful and don't lose the reversible screw driver bit. It also has storage for a spare blade and a bottle opener for cracking brewskis.
A work blade is going to be abused. Might as well use utility blades that cost a few cents each.

I like the compact one. My coworker has that one and just lost the bit a month ago.
I cut thru a lot of compressed cardboard for shipping and double-stacking pallets. It takes a ton of passes with a regular blade to cut thru, and it's always getting stuck mid cut. Sawing thru it with a serrated blade seems like it would work the best. I just want one knife to do everything, since I'm tired of my pockets being crowded by the Milwaukee and this as well

Fucking ass, my mom bought two serrated chinesium ass "kitchen knives" because it was 99 cents on clearance for ~70 cents. It's basically free so "who cares" except I do care because the purchase is encouraging the mass production of bullshit and someone is out there making a quick buck, a waste of space, probably isn't sharp, has an unsharpened heel that I hate even if it wasn't serrated (in case I bother sharpening it).

hey all,

i want to have sturdy mini knife on my keychain. Just in case i would need to cut rope, scrap dirt or sharpen a twig. Nothing related to self-defense or mega scouting. Was looking into this gerber key note, but i'm pretty sure i could get better quality for same price (~30 amurican or jurope moneys). Also, gerber looks like a brand to be avoided.
Any recommendations?

You might expect anyone making a fake copy of an existing product to be trying to scam you, but believe it or not they actually take pride in their work even when it's stolen. Vespa also makes microtech clones that in some respects surpass the originals while being cheaper. It is bizarre, from our westerner pov, we would think that if you had the capability of making a good product, you would naturally want to make something that's uniquely your "brand", because it's a shameful thing to copy, only scammers who can't make anything worthwhile would do it we think. But in China "do as the successful have done" is a cultural pillar, they are not ashamed one bit to put actual craftsmanship into something they completely copied.

Yeah, I could do without the fake branding. Just make a decent knife in the same style, good enough for me. I guess I won't cry that it's there though and the quality seems fine even if I have no idea what the blade steel actually is. Axis locks are nice.

Looking again, I just noticed that most Ali sellers seem to be hiding the locking mechanism for their knives but Amazon seems okay. Weird.

What is with Damascus being used on everything these days? Is it honestly better? I feel like a commemorative HK knife should be done with, idk, a traditional Solingen carbon steel or something interesting?
Forge de Laguiole forges their own proprietary T12 and T14 artisan steels in-house. The steel was designed by a French steel company specifically for their forging techniques. Why can't they do something like that in Germany? That would be awesome, even if they're using a modern, bespoke steel, as long as it has some cultural connection to Germany.

it appears to be a victorinox classic. more up-close, high res photos of any text on the blade would be appreciated.
the estimations of >>64022788 and >>64022788 are wrong, provided the markings do designate it a real brand. I don't think it's missing parts, and that is simply an old style of tweezers with a metal end instead of plastic, please provide another image to check.
the blade says Hoffritz, which was a NY-based cutlery shop /importer (of SAKs and more) that closed down in 1993.
Since it has horn scales (which is uncommon for victorinox) I'd estimate it's easily worth $50, maybe $100. depending on rarity and condition. maybe it's worth more than that if the writing and horn make it extra rare.
what I find unusual is that the horn scales incorporate space for tweezers and hide the rivets, the 58mm vics with horn scales I've seen had visible pins and no space for the tweezer.
in any case, don't use it, keep it as a collectors piece since it seems to be in good condition still.
I recommend asking on bladeforums or reddit, there's entire subforums dedicated to nerding out over SAKs so they'll surely be able to tell you more than I can.
