was looking at NFA full auto weapons, but maybe the NFA will go away, so i'm looking at M1 Garands and/or M1 Carbines

What should I look for in getting a quality specimen?

Unlikely. SBRs/SBSs and suppressors will probably be deregulated within the next few months/years, but I doubt the courage and integrity of RINO legislators.
>What should I look for in getting a quality specimen?
IDK about M1 carbines, but Garands are so commonplace that you can probably find several in local gun shops that you can inspect in person so just buy the best example. If you're really worried or if you want to buy one online, then you can get one certified by the CMP to be in the desired condition.

a boomer at a gunshow
be prepared to pay too much

but honestly, even a low quality garand is still a quality rifle so don't feel bad about getting a not so nice one so long as you're satisfied with it
don't know much about m1 carbines so I can't speak on them

>m1 garand
Clean bore, straight op rod, all parts intact
>m1 carbine
The bores are almost always good (weren't issued with corrosive ammo), make sure that the thing works I guess.

Lots of mixmasters and arsenal rebuilds for both. If you're looking for a shooter rather than a collectible, these are what you want. Also focus on less desirable manufacturers. Rock-Ola and IBM didn't make better carbines than Inland (the original GMC Inland, not the copycat) did, but they cost a hell of a lot more.

>Short Barreled Rifle
>Short Barreled Shotgun
There's a high likelihood that these will be deregulated in the coming years, and that they will have their classifications changed to just regular Rifles and Shotguns. Maybe some would be Pistols, but a Pistol with a stock wouldn't be an SBR anymore, it would just be a Pistol which has a stock on it.

>Any Other Weapon
Miscellaneous Shotgun stuff and other smoothbore things would most likely be taken out of this classification if the previous happens, along with that part about VFG's which the AFT has been trying to enforce.
Potentially, the AOW classification could remain in place for things which are obfuscated to not appear as guns (cane guns, pen guns, etc).

>Silencers
Looking like it may also face further deregulation in the future. Probably, a Silencer will end up just having the same legal status as any other kind of firearm, no special registration or tax on the thing, but they'll want you to fill out a 4473 at the store.
Most pro-gun people would probably accept that compromise, because it removes almost all federal barriers to ownership, and you could still make your own (80% silencer kits would probably become a thing).

>Destructive Devices
>Machine Guns
These would PROBABLY not be deregulated, just because there isn't enough political will for that.
However, it may one day become possible to register new transferables again, as well as some other changes to various rules on machineguns. Maybe there will stop being a difference between Sample and Transferable, or Samples can be turned into Transferables.
Bore diameter alone for rifles and pistols may stop being relevant for DD classification at some point, or otherwise have further leeway to it.

Any big changes to DD and MG legalities are not likely in the next few years, however.

>straight op rod
The oprod on the Garand isn't supposed to be 100% straight, it's meant to have a slight bend.

ATF actually changed some pre-may samples into transferable a few years ago. They had to be LEO guns.

The courts might effectively deregulate machine guns. There was a ruling last year I think that challenged the ATF's claim that machine guns are dangerous and unusual on the grounds that they're only unusual because the ATF banned them. In combination with the growing prevalence of FRTs, and the fact that without SBR/SBS/AOW/suppressors, the NFA is essentially a tax that no one is allowed to pay, I think the NFA's days are numbered. That probably just means that it will be replaced by something worse, but maybe it doesn't.

Something like that, but I mean more that an SOT in possession of a Sample MG may one day be able to file to have it turned into a Transferable. There'd be no waiting for a whim of the AFT, they'd just file the paperwork at will and have it done.

>The courts might effectively deregulate machine guns.
They could, odds are better than ever, but I still don't think we're gonna get there really soon. SBR, SBS, AOW, and Silencer deregulation is very likely to happen within Trump's term (may even happen in 2026, it's in our sights), but MGs are gonna take longer probably.
May or may not see MGs open for new Transferables again, perhaps even within Trump's term, but complete deregulation is unlikely for now. At least it seems that way to me.

>That probably just means that it will be replaced by something worse, but maybe it doesn't.
Potentially, but likely more on the individual state level.

The ATF tries to go for it, but as I understand, they have never been able to land a conviction for it, every time it looks like they're about to lose the case, they back out and drop the charges.
