I'd expect that things are much more complicated these days, what with the greater availability of decent grappling schools. My nod to self defense today (besides basic physical fitness) is to wear hiking shoes with composite toes because I know firsthand how goddamned bad it hurts to get toe kicked with something like that. I also carry a gun on my walks but that's more for semi feral pitbulls than for people. People are easy to read and are thusly easy to deal with. Dogs concern me. Certain dog breeds, you don't know what the fuck they're thinking.
