Resource on what these spec terminology mean

You shouldn't be chasing for spec values but they do exist and if you wanted to know what "better spec" values are there's a way to know which unit is desirable over another.
Most retailers won't post this info as they build NVDs to order, first come first serve, and depending on their grading scale of high, mid, low tier it may differ from retailers. If a retailer offer a โ€œready to shipโ€ fully built units they will list the spec values. Hand select is an option from retailers that will try to match to your spec requirements.

Some reputable retailers:

https://steeleindustries.com/

SNR: signal to noise ratio, the amount of signal the tube can make compared to the noise
EBI: equivalent background information, how much false image appears in the screen through which the actual image has to show, sort of a noise floor of sorts
Halo: How big the circle of bloom is around lights
Photocathode Sensitivity: How sensitive the photocathode is
LP Resolution: Line pair res of the center of the image as measure against a standardized chart

If one spec is shit it negates the rest, if you have a halo of 2.0 it kinda fucks on an EBI of 0.20 if you want to do any kind of shooting and it's all a balance game

The numbers to meet or beat are
EBI under 1, preferably under 0.6 being great, 0.1 is gucci
Halo under 1, anything under 0.7 is awesome
SNR, over 25 anything over 30 is gucci
Photocathode, 1900+ is pretty great, 2500+ is stellar
Resolution of 64+ is good, 72+ is gucci

I'm sure the sites mention it but a separate spec is that white phosphors are still a somewhat higher cost feature but can make a decent different for some of us in recognition vs green. ymmv on the value of that one. Also, one feature I would argue is never worth skipping nowadays is autogating. Unless you're in the absolute middle of nowhere the occasional artificial light will happen and it's very annoying if it just blows out your view. I don't think any savings from some super budget early gen without it are worth it.

this
also to be honest without white phospher I doubt I'd even really be into night vision in the first place, the neon green is just a big turnoff
and anyone have information on red phosphor night vision? i know when it comes to old 80s computer screens it tends to perform the worst due to longer lasting image burn in but it seems pretty cool

Are there any knockoff bump helmets and dovetail mounts that are gtg? I've got a spare PVS14 that I'll lend to no-nods friends sometimes, but its only got the skullcrusher. Would like to make a more solid setup for it so it could be worn for a few hours without much discomfort.

If you can get it for under $800, it's good enough. However, at $1k you're better off buying the iris or the lasersneed.

whats the point of this if you can just get domed by someone using a thermal scope 500 yards away, without any hope of ever seeing him because he's far outside of the range of your lasers and illuminators yet he sees you clear as fucking day

There's no point other than navigation. Modern NV is a psyop meant to deprive men from their money so they don't have funds to build fortified compounds from which to defend their families.

thermal vision/scope plus home fortifications and a drone seems like a lot better of an investment than NVG tbdesu
i'll be the first to admit that biggest reason i want night vision is purely for fucking around and probably airsoft, thermals are for real work, like TCD (total coyote death), hunting, surveillance, and detecting heat leaks or abnormal temperatures in equipment

I think thirty years from now the same conversation will be had about SWIR night vision and MWIR thermals. Eventually a kind of super-fusion will emerge between NIR, SWIR, and MWIR spectrums that sees NV, can see things that try to hide from NV, and see thermal signatures through fog, smoke, even glass.
Also wall penetrating radars for combat in built up areas.

>and detecting heat leaks or abnormal temperatures in equipment
You can do that though with a pretty cheap $250 phone clip on flir, I use one and it works great for that sort of thing, and testing your soldering jobs and shit like that. If you've got coyotes than yeah that's a pretty decent reason to go for a thermal scope or goggles. But I actually sorta lean towards NVG being one of the more value delivering tools for a lot of rural people, simply because very few of us will ever actually fire our gun in anger, we don't have hogs or coyotes around either, and while night hunting is neat it's not really necessary and limited times per year. Whereas even if it's for larp or just plain exploring the woods at night nvg is a lot of fun. So if we're talking a simple $/hour, like, the cost of something divided how many hours total you use it, I wouldn't be surprised if many accessories might win out over the gun itself.

Everyone talks big game about being able to "afford" an Iris until the Check engine line pops on or an appliance breaks. People that can throw thousands at hobby stuff and weather any problem in their life are few and far between. Lotta boomers are living in massive debt buying toys to fill the house they reverse mortgaged.

Stick with analog NV. Thermals cannot see through glass and you will find the NUCing / refresh annoying for navigation. The more you spend the less those are a problem.
