/k/ doesn't have special operator threads anymore.

Reminder that all of these guys lie and fluff up their records.
>US Army MSG Tim Kennedy, a Green Beret and major public figure within the post-9/11 veteran community, admitted this week to lying about receiving a valor award for combat service and to exaggerating parts of his service.

Sometimes I think about lying through my teeth and making some operator vetbro podcast or coffee brand just to see how much money I could make before people realized I'm a pog and full of shit, but I've just got too much shame and empathy to pull off a con like that.

Special forces aren't really that important anymore, now that GWOT is over.

>Sure, if Venezuela invades Guyana, you could drop a platoon of green berets into the jungle, and have them train the locals to fight for you.

Or you could just bomb the venezuelans.

>You could use a team of delta force operators to attack a HVT in a civilian area.

Or you could use an R9X missile, or maybe even an FPV drone with a tiny warhead.

>The SEALs could still do VBSS operations, if pirates capture a civilian ship.

PMCs as security on the boats are cheaper for the shipping companies than potential delays due to pirates.

>Special forces aren't really that important anymore, now that GWOT is over.
They're important for diplomatic reasons.
The no1 thing they do all day is training with foreign forces.
It's VERY common for Nation-A to send their special forces to Nation-B to provide training and build diplomatic tires, bonus points if they can shill Nation-B's army into buying some weaponry made in Nation-A.

That proves his point, though. The primary combat missions they used to have in droves are severely diminished and they serve different purposes.

Training foreign forces was always original purpose of special forces. That was the whole point of creating such forces in the early cold war.
Yeah, sure, they sometimes went out on live missions to OPERATE OPERATIONALLY. But such situations were exceptions, not rule.

It's still combat-adjacent if they're supporting a combat mission while they're doing that. The focus shifts from training some locals to training foreign partners/allies. Hence, non-combat.

Because they don't have any Tier 1 operators. They have instead multiple Tier 2 under PLASOF which is rather vague in how good they are since it's lots of different brigades. The closest is probably the Sea Dragon Commandos which some argue are the equiv of SEALS but obviously difficult to actually work out if that is true or not.

AI will spit out shit saying they have comparable units to the SAS or SEALS and then list off shit like the Snow Leopards which are a counter-terrorist unit attached to the police and internal security forces, not a special ops force that also has counter-terrorist duties.

tl;dr they don't have a known or renowned one because they only set up a SpecOps system in the very late 80's and China is purposefully quiet about a lot of shit (for example, nobody knows what the head of their intelligence agency is called. They have no MI6 or CIA or whatever, in those circles they are known simply as 'Beijing').

Honest question. What's the point of beanies or balaclavas in this attire? They both look like garbage compared to a proper helmet and obviously don't protect. A balaclava specifically might even impede airflow during a key moment.

anonymity. prior to the last maybe 15 years, SOF units were very secretive because there's zero benefit to foreign nations or terror groups being able to identify the personnel that would be deployed against them. overall its gone by the wayside since GWOT and Facebook and podcasting, but some countries still take it seriously. secondly they could be flash hoods, but they tend to have large bibs and neck coverage so they're distinct from regular ski masks and gaiters.

I was an 18x. Made it through selection then got in a motorcycle accident two weeks before I had my date for Q. I can answer most questions people have if you'd like.

The Army in its infinite mercy allowed me to finish my contract as a support guy with 5th group, so I did get to do a fair amount of fun training and schools.

If anyone here is/was an 18 series, there was some pretty scandalous stuff that happened around my accident with SNCO's so I'm curious if you'd know about me lol.

JCETs still happen constantly. Not only do ODAs and ODBs regularly become the face of the US Army abroad, it serves as a diplomatic means of controlling foreign militaries. Training guerilla fighters isn't their only purpose as GWOT reformatted SF to include many of the tasks typically assigned to Battalion or SMU. Same reason SEALs don't strictly fight on boats anymore. I always thought it was weird when armchair observers try to pigeon hole the community you're not even a part of. I did get to go to an Embassy party once and got drunk with an ambassador's daughter one time, though.

Western SF have to care about the whole human rights and hearts and mind shit, so they're ordered to show their faces in battle unless it's absolutely necessary to cover them since covering your face makes you feel less accountable so you're more likely to be excessively brutal and commit random war crimes (or so psychology says). This was part of the "mindset" they trained into the ukrainian SF that western media praised for having a "westernized mindset" (variations of the phrase "they think like us") where they did away with the classic russian balaclava look.
