In some ways, it can fucking rule. Commonly, a lot of people agreed that your infantry rifle being able to also launch grenades (be that with fitting one on the muzzle and sending it flying with a high powered blank, or an underbarrel attachment taking self-contained grenade cartridges), was extremely baller and really useful.

In civilian life, something you will see in some places is combination hunting guns, where you can have something that's like a typical double barreled shotgun, but it also has a rifle barrel too, so it's the kind of hunting weapon which can easily fulfill a lot of different roles depending on what you load it with.
A lot of people think it's easier (and more importantly cheaper) to have just a few different guns for that, but for some, having a single gun which they can hunt all their game with is exactly what they want.

Hell yeah. As long as it doesn't significantly interfere with bulk and ergonomics, hence why underslung GLs and rifle grenades were used by everybody but OICWs barely caught on.

Well, not all approaches are sound. The Crossfire dramatically overcomplicated everything because it wanted to be a pump-action shotgun feeding from a detachable tube mag in the stock, and also a pump-action rifle feeding from AR15 magazines, all in the same gun, and it was mechanically selectable between the shotgun or rifle, all with the same trigger and same pump.
Aside from being a complete Rube Goldberg contraption on the inside (to the point that the owner's manual warns you against trying to disassemble the weapon yourself), you end up with a big and clunky gun which is not very good at being a rifle nor a shotgun.

If you look at a typical European Drilling, it's like said, your typical double-barreled shotgun but it also has an extra barrel which is a rifle. Not very complicated, and only a bit heavier than a regular shotgun.

The OICW is cool in kind of a videogame gun sort of way. Goofy as hell, but it's still kinda cool.

Haven't lots of soldiers gone back to standalone launchers, though?

Yeah, and in part that's because it means lighter rifle when not in use; but its also because the M320 is awkward as shit when mounted. I think it still would have been a trend if we still had the M203, but it would be much less widespread.

I have a vague idea of it, but I really never understood why both barrels share one bolt carrier, and you could definitely NOT fit very much explosives in a .50 caliber projectile.

>>63972660
Because the M320 isn't a proper underbarrel launcher, it's a standalone launcher which can be attached onto a rail if you want, making it ungainly and bulky as fuck, defeating the whole point of an underbarrel launcher.

md5: 59eae56208ced590df5324437b73a423๐Ÿ”
>>63972671
Steyr's GL40 is a great example of how tiny and sleek you can make an underbarrel 40x46mm launcher if you want, and it swings outward so you can load long shells like big flares or even those fancy PIKE rounds.
Pic related is the one with the mount for the Steyr AUG, there's also one which fits picatinny rails.

The H&K M320 is a really good standalone launcher, it's sleek and compact in that sense, but it's goofy and unsuited as fuck as an underbarrel launcher, it's got all this extra standalone infrastructure which a dedicated underbarrel launcher doesn't need.
