Unironically this is a major reason I chose not to join, and something I think the army has really been accumulating "debt" around by being lazy for decades. It's been pretty unpopular and 'lame' etc with the younger set but I'm an unironic patriot, despite also being realistic about my countries weaknesses and up there on the payscale. I was willing to serve, and if I served I could completely understand that accidents happen, that obviously the whole point is to fight an enemy that wants to kill you and that no amount of current technology and effort produces a magical force field, so maybe I end up dead or disabled.

But I did feel like it was reasonable that IF everything went reasonably well, we won, lucked out with no bad ied incidents, and I completely my tour of duty, THEN I'd be able to go back to civvie life and have a decent rest of my life, like WW2 vets or the like. That it's a job, a risky job but so are other private sector jobs, and that the army should follow minimum best practices same as the private sector. But from what I can tell the army has long since passed the point of treating their infantry as robots that can be consumed for their useful service life then discarded and any massive health issues afterwards are Not The Army's Problem. Ludicrous amounts of weight for training that are near guaranteed to cause long term damage, awful unnecessary pollution everywhere that the private sector had to clean up from 30 years ago but the Army got exemptions, little to no suppression, and now it's fucking horrible, just a mediocre working environment in general. I guess I dunno, I feel like necessary risks that come with the job are ok, but unnecessary ones because they didn't want to spend 1% extra on a better cleaner even while pissing away gigabucks on rando shiny big kit that then got cancelled ten years later is kinda bullshit.

I both did and do though, I started my own business last year and it's doing well. Contracting in general (electrical, plumbing, construction, roofing, etc) all pays super well around here. During the early days of the war, outside of VDV and Spetsnaz units, it became clear that the Russian infantry forces were very ill-trained and unprepared. Some of the footage made them look ANA-tier. Wandering around looking lost during firefights and artillery attacks.
