Any reason why the soviet tankers were given autism helmets?
huh?

German and British tank crews were wrong to not wear impact-resistant head gear in tanks that had no padded interior.

soviet tanks were all round and cozy inside, no anti-human sharp edges of capitalistic tanks

you're gonna need it when the turret gets launched out of orbit

The inside of a tank is not padded and the ride is not smooth. It's pretty common to bang your head on random crap. Obviously, you need a helmet.

On the flip side, Russia was in an economic crunch at the time and had enough trouble just making enough leather boots for their infantry. Leather helmets were right out so Russian designers improvised with rolled and folded cloth.

Probably so they don't end up suffering from brain damage every time they hit a slight bump. Brain damage is reserved for their booze.

Because when you're going cross-country at speed in a metal coffin you need an autism helmet to prevent getting a concussion every time you hit a bump.
All in all the Soviet helmet was fine. In fact, IIRC Bundeswehr adopted them after reunification for all of their AFV crews and only replaced them with a new one relatively recently.

Form follows function.
You want to protect against knocks to the head? You end up with something that looks like that.

the US tanker helmet was inspired by sports helmets like whats used in football, since at the time they were their best guess as to what a lightweight anti-concussion helmet would look like

The Soviets were cheap.
Period.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirza

the helmets were a cheap solution - no other way to put it.

They drank vodka before getting teeth pulled. If they even pulled them.
The hats were even made of fake leather.

the term "Fish fur" exists...

Telogrekas were filled with chopped straw at some point because wool filler wasn't available and Straw was breathable.

The bums used wool foot wraps in winter and cotton in summer

the common Infantry was issued 25 rounds for combat.

There were no real medics

A boiled potatoe and raw onion were rations. A tin of meat was a feast.

>the common Infantry was issued 25 rounds for combat.
standard combat load was 70 rounds
with bandoleers with an additional 70 rounds being available for issue

this was pretty close to what the US had, which was 88 rounds in the belt and a 48 round bandoleer as special issue
and larger than what the british got, which was just 40 rounds standard

Both skull cap and CVC helmet have their own advantage and drawback

For example, russian style skull cap has looser tolerence so it can be easily mass produced, easily replaced and can be issued to any person with normal sized head. Also the few guys that I've spoken too said it's much more comfortable to wear and can double as a makeshift pillow

The drawback is that you hav to wear comm separately. That piece of fabric where earpiece supposed to hang to? Yeah that's going to rip off in no time

I'm not mocking the helmet, just condemning your choice of helmet-wearer and providing an objectively superior candidate.

>British tank crews
They actually had the RAC helmet and a leather one before WWII. They intentionally chose to not (universally) use them, so that's entirely on them.
>>63981077 (OP)
As far as I know Russia didn't even get a hard ballistic shell CVC-style tanker helmet until Ratnik, which only started in 2015.

tanks are expensive. People are cheap. Helmet to protect tank from crew's head, so padding on outside of helmet.
