just have a look at india and pakistan recently
there seems to be massive propaganda victories when a bird is lost, even though that's the natural order of warfare

there's also the fact that production of birds is slow as hell nowadays

Modern societies can't stand even the mostinsignificant losses due to the prevalence of individuality.

>1: People generally don't like it when the other guy shoots back
>2: Given the cost and slow production speed of modern airframes not even the US can afford to lose them, even at a rate well below the one that was considered 'acceptable losses' in WWII.
>3: Gotta justify that defense spending and corporate welfare/'not-welfare' program somehow, and expensive and highly capable, high cost, weapon systems do all of that very well.

Well to be fair I don't think not having one would have helped me. Other people turned out better than me

Pilots can die. US now has more reserve pilots than during Vietnam.

The giant support and training staff and infrastructure probably wouldn't do it for free though, and you'd be a pretty useless pilot without them even if you were physically and mentally tailored to the role. That's before you get to the maintenance and support staff each pilot and his aircraft needs for every day of their service. Plus the cost of their housing, and meals, and associated living concerns, for the pilot plus all of the support and training staff, and the support and training staff that the support and training staff need.
>tl;dr - war is pretty boring, and the administration/economics of it is often more important than the heroics at the front. You don't have to like it, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.
