It's a lot more flexible. This French idea that armored recon had to double as a tank destroyer forced them into an oversized primary armament for both the ERC and the AMX-10RC
Now that missiles are finally understood to be sufficient for on-the-move AT (so..not SACLOS, especially not wire-guided), they were able to switch to 40mm CTAI, which can do antipersonnel, light armor piercing, airburst, etc..
I think the TITUS was cooler than the VBMR, though.

the predecessor the Panhard EBR was similarly armed

France still does combined arms at the company and platoon level.
A platoon of ERC/AMX and I assume Jaguars is accompanied by 6 VBL scout cars, I would imagine they would have the drones.
It has an integral ATGM launcher too, maybe in time that could be upgraded to launch a loitering munition drone?

Massive improvement, providing all the elecronics don't fuck up too often. But there's still some issues to iron out regarding the turret stability afaik.
