They're super-thin and flexible since they're essentially gloves.
This means that your feet need to be nearly as strong as if you went bare-foot 24/7 and therefore, if you just started walking on concrete with them all the time without training, you can damage your feet.

Shoes do in fact weaken a lot of the musculature in the foot because it's just not required when wearing pumped-up pillows on your feet whenever you're on a hard surface.

Tape you feet and dunk the boots in water and walk around on a hot day. I mean absolutely drench them. Then let them dry and rub them in with lots of beeswax type leather conditioner.
Should speed up the process a fair bit.

I got some surplus jungle boots from Wellco, and they were pretty dry out of the box. Now they fit like a glove and I love wearing them.

normal boots require 200 hours to break them in, thats 6 weeks at 8 hours per day.
start wearing them until you feel a blister form.
take them off for 3 days until blister heals some
put boots back on until the blister forms again
rinse and repeat until your blister turns to hard skin and its no longer an issue

both, though the latter by much more, I can usually break in new boots for at least a day or two before having to walk several km in one go, but I have also had to go on long marches with brand-new boots & when that happens it's double socks, usually one sports sock & a wool sock top, if I can take my time I usually wear just wool socks.

Here's the secret: Wear TWO pair of socks.
One ordinary pair, one woolen on top of the first.

Blisters happen when fabric or leather causes fricktion against your skin.
By wearing two pairs of socks the friction happens in between the socks, rather than on your skin. Less blisters.

This is one of those unofficial lessons that you learn in the military. If your sergeant is kind, he will tell you up front. He he is an asshole, he will teach it to you hte hard way.

I googled Barefoot Shoes and most of the results had toes anyway, the ones that did were practically identical to Vibram Fivefingers so yeah, exactly the same thing, just more generic branding I guess.
Vibrams were first I think so charged a premium for it.

>I actually run in them on the treadmill, yeah they definitely use more muscles. Had to get used to em.
That was the advice given to me when I bought them too. I think there was a note about it with them too.

>Also they stretched out that tendon that runs up the back of your leg to your butt.
I suspect that if I hadn't worn them in a bit (and used to being barefoot or wearing very thin slippers in martial arts), that tendon might be what gets damaged.

They're good for your feet though, I dated a ballet teacher for a while and she was shocked that how much strength I had in my feet as an office worker.
Dancers or maybe just dance teachers, are really into feet.

Shoemakers take up to five different measures of you feet: length, width, height and various circumferences for your shoes to fit.
If you're buying boots off the shelf then more often than not you must try many of them to find the one fits your foot shape.

This. Fucking this.
My work boots used to have a small square of foam under the heel and when it fell off walking in the boots immediately started to take a toll on my knees.

Boots tend to have flat bottoms for stability, but that means you suffer way too much impact when walking on hard surfaces. The thick soles help but they're hard soles.

Anyone who wants to call me a faggot for crying about it is welcome but my entire lower back, bladder, hips are fucked. It's not a trivial complaint, my life is shit now.

>How on earth did she determine you had so much strength in your feet?
Because she couldn't keep her hands off them. We lay in bed and she'd be massaging my feet and stuff because her world is all about feet.'
Dancers (and teachers) are essentially professional athletes and her feet were always blistered, sometimes bleeding and generally fucked up; my feet are baby-soft because I don't dance on them for 20 hours a week but because I wore five-fingers a lot, they were way stronger than they looked like they should be.

Best of both worlds of going barefoot and keeping them protected.

Mole skin.
If you wear new boots for a few hours, you will quickly identify the "hot spots" and then you just put the mole skin on those places.
Mole skin is a basic medical kit item along with imodoum (anti diarrhea meds) and diaper rash cream. Nothing sucks more than blistered feet, and an exploding and/or chapped ass. Your freinds will worship you if you can provide any of these three things when they are needed.

>how does one actually find a local cobbler?
The last time I had some shoes fixed properly by a cobbler, it was in an alley in fucking China.
I wore a pair of shoes over there that were on their last legs and they fell apart while I was in Tianjin, I asked a taxi driver to take me to a cobbler and he did and the guy sewed the soles back on (plus glue) and they lasted for another year.

Back in the west, one cobbler glued soles back on for me but they fell off a week later, repeated that a few times with him and he could never make them stick.
Another cobbler I asked to sew them gave me a half hour rant about how no cobbler would waste their time sewing soles back on because they couldn't get needles or something. He wouldn't give me back my shoes until he'd finished ranting but I was young and much nicer back then so I didn't just vault the counter and grab them.

Don't be dense anon, it's leather stitching not rocket science. I live in a middling sized midwestern town (Houston) and there are a hundred or so cobblers in the area that can do this sort of thing.

Unfortunately I think that ship has sailed and they’ve crossed the “cost effective to fix vs just replace” line…. On a side note.. if your breaking laces all the time… don’t buy “unbreakable diamond laces”…. Which 100% do live up to their name and will not break… but will instead rip the eyelets off your boots… instead… don’t tighten the laces so much… or move to a taller boot… which is what I ended up doing for more ankle support…. Rip danners, wore them every day for the better part of 4 years…. Now they have been relegated to garden boots.. and of course I damaged the same boot in both sets so I can’t just pair up the good ones…

I never had a problem until I bought a pair of Thursday leather boots. Tried to break them in with thick wool socks. Worst blisters I've ever had. Had them stretched, that helped some. My advice is two pairs of socks. Mix equal parts water and 93% rubbing alcohol and wet down the leather before wearing. Wear them around for a few hours each day. I personally will never go through this again for a pair of fucking shoes. I just didn't want to waste $200. Plus, they are nice boots.

Your problem is elsewhere. They're either the wrong size or you need to change the lacing pattern for a better fit at the ankle.

If that's just a generic picture of a boot and you mean leather, you just wear them around places you're not doing much walking until comfy. Two pairs of socks helps, if you need to use a pair that's not quite there yet cut the feet off some stockings and wear those as well as socks. Don't forget your feet swell so loosen and re-tie your boots whenever you sit down for a rest. Moleskin is for when the problem's already happened.

This is correct. In the Navy we would break in a new pair by wearing them while doing Freshwater washdown on deployment. They get thoroughly soaked and you wear them in the heat until dry. Fit like a glove afterwards.
Double socks is a prophylactic, prevents the blisters until enough sweat and humidity can work form the leather, that’s why it takes so long.

>Moleskin is for when the problem's already happened
No, you apply dressing (no idea what moleskin is, hydrogel dressing is good tho) preemptively in places where you feel pressure or rubbing. It stretches boots where they need to be stretched - and protects your feet BEFORE you have a problem.
Just wearing boots in the house (with dressings) should solve what can be solved as the leather will be both slightly heated and moisturized which helps shaping it. Sitting in your boots will be gentler on you feet than walking in them and it will still work.
No "breaking in" will make the boots longer and it can only make them microscopically wider. Buy proper size in the first place (internet shopping only if you are fully prepared to throw this money away - or you're buying shoes that you had already wore before)

Don't know what the hell hydrogel is, but duct tape works better than moleskin and has the advantage of being cheap and multipurpose. And yes, tape your feet before you get blisters.

The other thing that I don't think has been mentioned yet is just toughen up your feet. I get blisters if I haven't hiked in a while even with broken-in boots. The more callused your feet are, the easier it is to break in boots.

First, put a good coat of quality oil on the outside. I use Obenauf's boot oil. Let them dry overnight. Wear them daily. Use quality socks, wool is preferable around all seasons, and use sock liners if necessary. Move around in them. Squat, bend the toe box, tip toe, walk on your heels. Just move in them every day. Next week, put another coat of oil. Do the same. Give it about a month. Once you're done with the break in and want some water resistant boots, use a grease (I use obenauf's heavy duty lp). Rub the grease in on the inside and outside of all leather parts every day for a week, letting the boots set in a warm area, every week for a month, and as needed after that. Been wearing PNW logging boots for years. Jungle boot break in is a joke compared to those. Just deal with it. The boots are breaking in your feet as much as you're breaking them in.

If you don’t have a good cobbler near you, you can mail boots or shoes to a good one. Bedo’s Leatherworks in Falls Church, VA is one I see recommended a lot, and also one I can recommend personally. They have resoled several pairs for me.

They're mostly dead. The best places to look are near old folks or fancy fuckers. I found one in my city and he's the tops, but I live in Granolada in the PNW so we still have niche folks like this. I about died the other day talking to my lady and her complaining about shoes and I said take them to a cobbler, she had no idea what the fuck that was

That's because women's shoes aren't rebuildable. The only thing a woman might use a cobbler for is dyeing that one pair of white shoes to some other color that better matches her latest outfit.

Took me two weeks to break in my Lowas but I got six good years out of them.
