ukraine wasn't doing any worse when they mostly just had soviet sam systems. the problem is they ran out of munitions for them.

The S-300s (there like 3 different systems using the same name + suffix) are ok against aircrafts, the warhead is oversized to compensate for accuracy and the range can be really impressive, but that only matters if it isn't jammed or destroyed by a radar homing radar. Against small drones and some BM can be useless.

Nobody said that the S-300 variants are bad SAM systems; they're probably state-of-the-art. What's ridiculous is saying that they can be made to dispatch stealth jets with minor modifications (they cannot, as can't any other SAM on the market) or that they're particularly helpful against countries that can do SEAD, a list that doesn't include Russia or Ukraine.

Remember the Su-34 that survived a Patriot hit? The response to that revealed a certain measure of insecurity that vatniks have about the S-300. I don't blame them.

We already have IR guided passive BVR(Mica the french)missiles, and IRST that can track stealth planes at 80km+(Pirate).
If any government dared to spend money researching and improving said missiles and sensors we would be talking less about radar right now.

That's what S-400(S-300PMU-3) is. And no, without upgraded missiles the capabilities don't really improve unless your older radars were quite shit. Evidently this didn't help russia much so we can conclude the current design hasn't fixed any of the system's fundamental problems and still performs worse than what Ukrainians with their own S-300 can manage out out of them, with neither of those performing even remotely close to what their paper capabilities suggest.

Bar the variant that came out in late 90's, they were outperformed by Bong's Bloodhounds from the 60's and 70's. Or whenever MkII came out and was retired before the variant that had a (very slight) range advantage over the Bloodhound. They're not particularly good, but they're not meant to be GOOD they're meant to be adequate with saturation of deployment being the advantage.

You are missing why the S series is currently no good. The lack of integrated data link is what fucks S series launchers. The missiles/radar are decent, but the lack of a data link and US stealth means that the launchers more or less just impotently wait in hopes of catching a Ukie air asset and nailing them. The Ukies shift theirs a lot and make use of Intel for better intercepts, I also know in their Frankensam they managed some form of data link which their network which helped them score some more high profile kills

S-300 radar and command console are too old. I'm guessing Ukraine had the advantage by integrating them with different detection and command systems in a way that would not be allowed in the frigid Russian or other shithole organization structures.

Dcs really sucks at anything other than an outlet for plane autists. If you enjoy managing systems and reading manuals dcs is great but as an actual simulation? It's awful. Warthunder of all games actually does some flight models better. The radars and missiles in general are awfully modelled.
