I had this as kid, it could fire real .22 ammo.
You had to drill the barrel and drum.
I was carrying that to elementary school, friend also had one. Different times.
Numerous revisions where made later to make it harder to convert it to real firearm like they moved slots on the drum to be over the bullet and not in between to prevent drilling.
It worked ok, accuracy was ofc shit, sometimes needle would pierce back of the casing causing nasty blowback right in the eyes, sometimes drum would not alight itself correctly making bullet tear itself apart in the barrel. Still have it somewhere.

Only if you aren't familiar with how smokeless powder works. It's needs pressure to burn, that pressure is contained by a gasket(brass), that gasket is contained by thick steel walls.
Now remove the thick steel walls for plastic, well now the gasket can't contain the pressure, which means insufficient pressure to burn properly, the brass will split and whatever gasses did burn will escape, the cylinder will melt and send plastic pieces but it's not like you're holding a hand grenade.
It could take out an eye though, wear protection.
