>>64014252 (OP)>Why is the completely flat Gaza strip a military stronghold from Hamas, while Israel nearly completely controls the mountainous West Bank and there aren't Hamas mountain bunkers and forts there?Israel used to occupy Gaza but pulled out in 2005. There were actually settlements there full of Jewish religious fanatics and the IDF had to go in and drag them out:

The Israeli brig. general (Gershon Hacohen) in that documentary is an interesting guy, and a religious man himself. But it's a double-edged thing, because it meant Israel didn't have to occupy Gaza anymore, and they walled it off, but that allowed Hamas to build up its forces and eventually catch them napping. In the West Bank, it's harder for the Lion's Den or Jenin Brigades or whoever to mass up and also arm themselves anywhere to the same extent because the IDF can go in whenever they want and bust them up. I'm not from Israel or Palestine, but that's what I've read about it. The Israelis also control the Jordan Valley in the eastern part of the West Bank (along the Jordanian border).
>I don't understand, aren't mountains supposed to be natural fortresses?Yeah but the Israelis occupy the hilltops and look down on the Palestinians in the valleys. Also it was a bitch for the Jordanians to reinforce because it's like a kidney-shaped vice. There aren't many east-west roads and Israel could air strike the resupply routes while squeezing them from multiple directions.
Also the politics varies locally. Again, from what I've read, there are a triangle of hot militancy in the northern part (Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus). And Gaza has had a reputation for being a nest of fedayeen for decades. It's a godforsaken piece of land with almost nothing to recommend it. Very densely populated and socioeconomically much less developed. The inhabitants make up for these problems by embracing Hamas' more fundamentalist brand of Islam.
