I can understand that for a platoon, but they are in no way, shape or form taking command of a whole battalion or above.

What I really don't get is the Sergeant Major of the Army/Marine Corps/Navy shit. They're nominally there to advise the head of the branch of what the enlisted needs, but they have been kissing ass for 25 years to get into that position that don't even remember what being a grunt is like.

It also fucks up the entire point of having separate enlisted and officer ranks. The point of enlisting is to get in, get paid, and get out, while your officers are more career oriented.

We're not talking about NCOs with proper jobs at the company level, but useless sinecure ranks that patrol the base for dress code violations.
https://press.armywarcollege.edu/parameters/vol18/iss1/4/

>"But some smart folks in Washington decided that we needed the ranks of E-8 and E-9. They never asked us what we wanted, they just sat up there in Washington and decided that we needed our image enhanced. Hell, all we First Sergeants wanted was our own permanent rank so that we didn't have to take our First Sergeant chevrons off and then sew them back on every time we PCS'd."

>More money was appreciated, of course, but in a way it was a bribe, an insult to us. But it did one thing for the Army; it smoked out all the bums and slackers that were in it for personal gain. They had been hiding in ROTC, recruiting, and reserve advisor duty for years. These clowns saw a quick pay raise before retirement, and they flocked back to fill the newly created Command Sergeants Major slots."

>The old soldier stopped a moment, lost in his memories, and then continued. "The real problem with all this was with you officers trying to build us up, to help our morale. So you decided to call these new positions Command Sergeants Major. And the dumb ones believed in the title. They began to act like commanders. They began issuing orders like commanders and holding meetings and such, and later they copied you officers and began to hold conferences. But the cold, hard facts are that they don't command squat; never have, never will, and they need to be told that once a day.''

>But what about training? What does the CSM program do for the training of young soldiers and NCOs? Don said it very forcefully: "There is no damn need for a CSM above brigade level. If Sergeants Major were doing what is really needed in our Army, they would be in battalions and brigades, leading and teaching. Above that level they are not in touch with people, and CSMs ought to be in the people business.

The entire system with separate enlisted and officer ranks stems from european aristocracy, where the officer ranks consisted of nobles (who usually bought their rank) and the actual competence was among the enlisted career soldiers (who could not become officers because they werent nobles).

In modern western armies, the officer class consists of political commissars, and the actual compentence is among the enlisted, who cannot become officers, because they have not been properly politically indoctrinated and vetted, which is the entire point of officer skool.

What's the deal with Warrant Officers in the US Army if these ranks exist?

In commonwealth armies the various grades of WO is one size fits all rank for enlisted above S/Sgt then they can be given an appointment to act as Pipe Major or whatever

Competence referred to actual job doing, not paperwork and logistics (can be done by a sergeant and his minions)

Warrant Officers are always technical guys that require a higher rank (and pay) than enlisted. Officers are generally required to either go up in rank by a certain time or get out, but Warrant Officers have a skill that the army doesn't want to lose. This is why so many helicopter pilots are WO; the army wants to keep their helo pilots and the guys joined up to do that.

Those positions weren't invented for no reason, but I do think their scope has crept beyond useful.

It's not that uncommon for pilots since if most fast jet pilots had the option they'd keep flying in frontline squadrons forever but the world needs QFIs and men with stars on their shoulders.
