I do actually use a specific gun oil.
But I use it because it's less toxic to me.
Motor oil will do just fine as a gun oil, it's just bad for the handler. If I were a robot I'd have no issues using it.

I use olive oil(Extra virgin like me).
Works greaf for sex, Sunscreen, Bread, rusty metal, cars and guns.

some people use motor oil, 3in1, breakfree, lithium grease, etc, all to suit their needs

a guy who shoots their gun frequently might use motor oil since its cheap & easy
someone living in a dry place may use remoil since it works well enough
another may use clenzoil since its humid where he lives
a guy who rarely shoots may use a grease since it'll always stick

Guns should be lubricated with grease. Oil is for sealed mechanisms, like a car engine, a gun is anything but that.

Not really. The manual for Polish MSBS rifle clearly says that you shouldn't use grease. I think most modern guns are designed to use oil.

My test for gun oil is my case stockman knife. Ive bought all the fancy gun oils and lube the joints of the knife. Usually within 2 or 3 days the knife joints creak and scratch type sounds when opening.
Valvoline 0w-20 lasts the longest, weeks usually.
That's what I use now on my guns.
Just bought a glock 44, brought it home, greased her up with 0w-20 and went shooting. Over 500 rounds in and not a malfunction of any kind.

Grease are for high load applications where higher viscosity is needed.

Which IS NOT 90% of gun parts.

The only part where there is an argument for it is on springs to prevent metal on metal contact at full compression.

High-speed, low load, easily relubricated: Oil
Low-speed, high load, rarely relubricated: Grease
