It is desirable that a gun cannot fire when the user isn't intending for it to fire. When the magazine is removed for storage or disassembly it is a clear sign that the user isn't intending to fore the gun and therefore it is beneficial for it to be made safe.

So I don't own any guns with one of these and have to ask given all the rage: is there actually some sort of downside? Because while I don't own a mag safety handgun I've also never once shot a mag using handgun without a mag in it, and I'm not really sure what the point would be. So on the face of it this doesn't seem like something that'd cause any problems, and clear visual indicators are always better in safety. Is it because they tend to be unreliable or something like that?

1. They usually tend to make the feel of the trigger worse somehow, adding weight and grit/creep. Removing the disconnect on a Hi-Power pistol is a common thing to do to improve their trigger.
2. If you want to be able to fire your gun without a magazine for various different reasons, then you can't.
3. Arguably encourages unsafe habits and handling for pistols which don't have the disconnect, someone who doesn't know better could easily treat another pistol like it would have one, when it doesn't.

Thanks for the serious replies anons, that makes sense. Figured it had to be some sort of irritating thing in practice, but while I manual load my bolt sometimes during load development and shoot with no mag not used to that with handguns.
