It's highly selective but the prime motivation is probably religious conviction. Regular guardsmen only get a yearly salary of roughly 15000€ and free food and housing.

The thing is that here in Switzerland we're too isolated from the world problems, but at the same time feel like we couldn't change shit. Nope. Also, Francis was extremely unpopular with like half of Catholics, myself being one of them, and the Swiss Guard did nothing. Switzerland themselves are largely a secular society, most of those who call themselves Catholic are non-practicing.
