Cambodia and Thailand are both kingdoms
Cambodia has a had the same family on the throne (roughly some 'cousin once removed' stuff but it's generally sons/brothers of the previous ruler) to at least the 1600's probably older than that but records get iffy, the Khmer kingdom in general is almost 2000 years old
The Thai's on the other hand are new bloods, with their dynasty only being a bit over 200 years old. With the Siam kingdom being around 800 years old total.
Suffice to say but Kingdoms that old that have had plenty of high and low points over the centuries there's a fair number of points where one came out over the other and they both have some territory the other owns for historical reasons. Specifically now there's a temple on top of a ridgeline at the border that's basically on reachable from Thailand but Cambodia controls that's relatively important to both.... i think.....
