Hey Kommandos, I picked up a sporterized 1903A3 in 30-06 for $250. Decent budget scope, mystery meat barrel, I've put about 80 rounds through it and all is good aside from the bolt being kinda rough and the magazine feeding funny on the 3rd round. My question is, should I get a Boyd's stock and keep this thing free floated? Or should I remilitarize it and basically have a 1903A4 with a better scope?

Check the serial number to see if it's from the iffy heat treatment era

If the barrel has been shortened at all it will look funny in a military stock. Why do you want a new stock; is it not shooting accurately?

Thanks fren, I've always had a thing for old bolt guns. It was either a 30-06 or some AR-10 308 DMR. I think of it like quality vs quantity since I plan to reload 30-06.

Whenever I get a new stock I'm gonna have a gunsmith install a Criterion match grade barrel so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm mostly interested in the military stock because of the aesthetic, and if I can get 1 MOA or better with that, all is good. For now the accuracy is pretty good though.

Bad news bros. My rifle is a Remington 1903-A3 and it the serial number starts with 300,000. I'm pretty sure that's not safe right?

I unironically want an NRA 1903 sporter with the lyman rear sight. Though preferably one that isn't low serial so I can shoot hotter boolet.

>Remington
If it's remington it should be fine. I think that only applies to Springfield Armory and Rock Island.

Remington started serials at 3,000,000. Theyโ€™re all safe. All โ€˜Remington/Smith-Corona โ€˜03-A3 are automatically safe range.

You're right, I looked into it. That would've sucked. I do have a weird idea. If I do the military stock I'm tempted to stain the wood a spooky grey color, would look nice in the winter time.

That would be dope, especially since you can use the stripper clips unlike me. I wonder what the best bullet weight is for a 1903? I bought a bunch of 180gr Sellier&Bellot 30-06, seems to work good.

Granted I'm apprehensive on stripper clips. I've got a yugo SKS that I have trouble getting to load with them.

Swedish Mauser stripper clips work great in US .30-โ€˜06 rifles. They also work for Mausers in 7x57mm and Arisaka series rifles.

Even if he had one, it's probably not a problem. The failure rate was under 1% and if the incident reports from 1917-1929 (what Hatcher tracked) are to be believed, the cause was almost always a fuckup that resulted in catastrophically high pressures. The receivers were generally fine in normal use, but load a 8mm in one and the results could be interesting.
>and not for nothing, most of the injuries were eye injuries that would have been prevented with eye protection, which they didn't normally use back then
>if you want to know for sure, give her a whack with a hammer, but if she fails the test she won't be much of a wallhanger after that, let alone a shooter

So what are you guys thinking regarding the Boyd's free floating stock vs the military stock?

and oil. I have little to no problems with my garand (only got bit cleaning it funnily enough) and I could practice with my mosin when I get the opportunity to get ammo and clips for it.

2,000% remilitarize it if you can. It's built for it, just sporterize some commercial shit. Restoration is based.

OR mannlicher stock is sexo.

If youโ€™re putting a new full-length barrel on it you may as well get a new โ€œCโ€ stock to go with it.

Donโ€™t waste time trying to restore it. That thing is well on its way to being a classy sporter. Get an elegant walnut stock for it or splurge for a nice wood blank and turn it into a real heirloom.
