The sharpest general on /k/.
Estate sale edition!

>"Yeah, baby, I know this KA-BAR belonged to your grandpa, but your dad with dementia just sold it to me for $14 and an expired Walmart deli sandwich. Oh, it's a priceless family heirloom? That's so cool! I'll remember that when I'm overhand throwing it at raccoons! By the way, your dad's eating a sandwich with mold in it, you should go tell him to stop."

"I want a knife recommendation."
Answer the following:
>Fixed or folding (or both (or neither))?
>Intended use/misuse?
>Blade length/girth?
>Local laws to ignore?
>You can afford this knife! Think of how much money you spend on food and water. Do you really need it? What about air conditioning? You can just turn it off and spend all that money on a knife! Do you really NEED air conditioning? Stop being a big baby, you can afford this knife!

Would it be legal to carry a 2 inch keychain knife in Australia?

The blade on my Swiss army knife is longer and those are also designed to be carried on a keychain, although I heard about an elderly guy who got charged for having one of those in Sydney as part of an anti-knoife crackdown. I have no idea if laws like this are only used against people acting like maniacs in public or if any random person could realistically get in trouble.

Picked up a Rexford ZT 0804 for $50 today. The listing just said
>9โ€Black Military Tactical Style Folding Pocket Knife From Estate Blade Sharp!
Yes, "blade sharp" indeed. I thought these kinds of deals only happen in knife guy fantasy land, but it happened to me. Pics were shit, but I knew what I was looking at. Estate sales are awesome.

The 0804CR is pretty rare today after they were discontinued. It was never a popular model, and only done as a collaboration, so idk if any Chinese clones exist. They only really copy the popular models.
It's confirmed to come from an estate sale. The description reads like the seller is huffing paint, but he accurately describes how the action is supposed to feel, and I think he's too stupid to lie.
No box or paperwork, so I'll definitely want to have ZT take a look, but I'm pretty confident in this one. Will update /kg/ when the knife comes in!

I mostly do antiques, so etsy can be fun, but more expensive.
I like designer knives, but they have to go the distance, because anyone can glue two pieces of wood to a sheet of metal and sell it as a knife these days. Signature stamps make me happy, and I also like the use of different bespoke metals. That's what I would look for in a custom knife.

I've had good experience with custombladeseu on Etsy, but he only makes sharpened blades. You have to add your own scales. This means his prices are pretty reasonable. For example, I recently bought an 8.5 inch blade, full tang leuku from him for $48. I think he only makes blades out of 80CrV2 which is fine by me because I like that steel. He also has a vid on youtube showing how he makes the blades and heat treating, but I don't remember the link. He's a Polish guy in Poland, but he ships to the US.

Can anyone tell me anything about these HOKC (NOKS) knives? Found images of the box confirming they're made in China, but apparently of good build quality and cheap. "D2 steel" might be a bit of a lie, but I hear good things. Are they just tacticool trash or are they worth having?

i have an air lite and finn wolf and while the finn wolf is oddly cool , it's not really for edc , it's for the woods, scandi grind is great for working with wood but for slicey knife stuff it stinks.
Air lite is probably my fav cold steel pocket knife. It's not crazy overbuilt like a lot of their stuff so it's slim, lite and slicey and it's like $40-55. I'm not prying stuff, stabbing car hoods or hanging 600 lbs off of it to test the lock on it either.
I don't have any experience with the other knives to comment. My .02

Found their modernized Finka model (ะคะ˜HะšA-C), just happened to be the cheapest one I could fine. Apparently all of these are "A. Biryukov" designs, but yes, they're made in China. D2 steel, G10 handle, which is interesting because it's a composite material like micarta or pakkawood. Kinda wish I got the orange and black version to show off the composite layers, because I like when they do that.
Might give this one away and go for the orange handle if I end up liking it.

I got my first microtech about a month ago (utx-85 gen 3) and now im hooked. I got this troodon and a couple more coming in the mail and currently waiting for single edge 85g3's. I have tried a bunch of other otfs and they just aren't on the level. I mean sure, Kershaw Livewire is reliable, better blade steel, pretty much equal build quality, but after getting accustomed to the way microtech blades satisfyingly click into place almost like a cassette going into a VHS player, it made me really hyper sensitive of the feeling of steel violently slamming into aluminum on the livewire every time it fires or retracts... the product of 3 decades of dialing in their action compared to Kershaw's first attempt is so apparent. It's a shame because the Livewire is legitimately good, the action just feels bad to me now.

As for my Lightning and SoS otfs, there's no comparison. The Lightning body feels like pot metal and the SoS action is so weak it fails to retract upside-down 3/10 times.

luv me moras. Good knifes with even gooderer bang for buck. The rat tail aspect is so negligible that I often forget it even has one, a full replacement costs LESS than getting even a middle of the shelf knife repaired. Extremely costumer favoured warranty and no dumbass 'political' moving's or motivations, just knives. They aren't the 'best' and they don't curry the tactical crowd anywhere near as much as benchmade or gerber, but mora is fucking king shit and I won't ever pretend it isn't.

30 degrees is for the back bevel, 40 degrees is for the very edge, or microbevel. I got my Buck 117 hair-whittling sharp on it with just the stones that came with it, no ultrafine stones required. I went and checked my Buck 110 that I had sharpened with it previously, and it was also hair-whittling sharp.

There are tons of knives with ambidextrous locks (all the crossbar and mid/back locks) with 2 or even 4 way positional clips, seems silly to stick with strictly left hand ones especially since I (and you apparently) can only think of Spydercos that do that.
>>64048771
Offhand I can think of Boker, Kershaw and Cold Steel that have ambidextrous locks and 2+ position clips. I'm sure there are lots of budget brand knives (Civivi, etc) with crossbar locks that also have reversible clips, I just can't think of any off the top of my head.

I have a CRKT Otanashi Noh Ken I used a pull-through on years ago, and it has been a project trying to get an edge on it. It's like the pull through dulled the edge, but left a burr that could cut paper so I thought it was ok at the time. Just have to get it to an apex at a consistent angle, but it's a reprofiling job to get to that point.

i appreciate microtechs build but eh it's not amazing especially now, the double spring action they're putting on their new knives with 0 blade play blows, i got a combat troodon and a vector from the 2000's they feel insanely better compared to most recent ones

now i just keep a scarab 2 gen 3 for work cuz it's convenient but gen3 lowkey blows the action sucks it gets stuck way more than it should for such an expensive knife

i hate to be the boomer but microtech used to be better, now it's for faggots that watch john wick 5 times and whine on reddit

I have single spring otfs and they feel kinda stiff and cheap. I vastly prefer the dual spring action but this seems to be preference. I haven't tried a single spring microtech though. They all get stuck if you work around a lot of dust or other such filth, even hawk deadlocks so price doesnt mean much there. Just gotta maintain them.

Idk what to say to the rest, im not a John Wick fan and I barely visit plebsit. Otfs I just find enjoyable.

Oh yeah be sure to do the brake cleaner rem oil combo on your scarab if it hasn't been serviced in forever.

the failing to fire and retract is on double springs CT gen3 and also the scarab gen3, i think the newer ultratechs too i forgot

No, it actually is a real hunting knife! It's a Cutco hunting knife. They're available on their website for $248. They're made from a "high carbon" 440A, and the handle is thermoplastic that they've been using for a while now, which sounds horrible until you use one and realize that they're actually kind of nice! The hunting knife is sort of a joke, they use 440A and this handle style for all their kitchenware.
Cutco used to (and probably still does) operate as a pyramid scheme. All the Cutco you find in the wild were, at some point, forced upon a family member for an outrageous price. They're probably sitting on a ridiculous stockpile of these knives, and they control the quantity that hits the market just like De Beers does with diamonds, which is really fucking weird for a company that just does mid-range kitchenware but clearly it's working.

I would recommend the whetstone. It's just better, and it will take off the least amount of metal for the best grind, you have more control over the angle, you can even get yourself angle guides to be sure.
I personally use a guided angle sharpener like pic related, it's good enough if you have a moderate restaurant-level workload, but a professional will use something like a Tormek T4

You had me curious and I recently got a couple more combat troodon gen 3's and did some test firing. The double-edged dagger fired 100 times out of the box pointing up for firing retracting pointing down at all angles no issue, but the drop point? I did notice there were certain times like 1 in 20 upside-down retractions where it would fail, and sometimes it felt weak like it almost failed. I thought maybe I got a dud so I checked my other Drop Point CT I already owned and it did the same. I thought okay so the issue is exclusive to drop points. What is going on here?

I realized that the amount of "skeleton" i had behind the blade was less when I held it upside-down, and the retractions were causing the blade to jerk downwards more than when I was firing upwards. The drop point blade either has more friction or is simply heavier and is jerking the handle harder. So anyway I grabbed the knife handle with my other hand to brace it better while retracting upside-down and both drop points handled 100 retractions for 200 total with zero failures or even weak retractions.

I believe what you were having happen was that at those certain "problem angles" were angles where your arm had little structural support behind the knife while retracting, so the handle jumped forward more and induced a failure. This is also probably why I cannot recreate the issue whatsoever on my little utx-85.

What's the deal with single spring being more reliable? This is pure guesswork but my guess would be since it is harder to actuate you grip the knife handle harder and this provides sufficient support for retracting at all times, the looser dual springs mean looser grip means more handle movement in reaction to retracting.

If you can recreate the failure in your scarab while holding the knife more still with your other hand or just squeezing it like you were holding a 2010 model, I'd be really interested to hear if yours still fails. This might all just be a massive cope.

I'm looking to get a budget edc knife that's cheap enough not to worry if something happens to it but good enough quality for everyday use.
I'm not the biggest fan of cold steel but they do offer decent quality for their price. For the price of a spyderco with 8Cr13MoV steel you can get a cold steel in aus10a.
I'd love to get something in s35vn or s30v, but I just can't afford it right now

It's in the style of a swiss army knife but with either colorful aluminum scales and N690 blade or titanium/cf scales and M390 and a choice of tools from blade only to what's seen in pic related

How about sub-$100 magnacut at 63-64 hrc? At this hardness it has the edge retention of S90V, the corrosion resistance of M390, and still significantly better chip resistance than both, on a shoestring budget.

https://www.bladehq.com/item--Ontario-Knife-Company-RAT-Model-1-5-Black-G10--209530

The only practical reason I can think to buy anything else is if you need an absolutely brutal use knife, then Cold Steel is always on the list.

Yeah after more testing friction caused by angle, gravity, momentum of the handle caused by a naturally looser grip caused by an easier to fire button, these things all appear to be exacerbating each other. I don't know if just squeezing it tighter will solve the issue completely. If the dual spring action is actually weaker (many reviewers say it's the same, some users say it's weaker, no one seems to have objectively measured it) it may just be a flaw of the design and you're right. Anyway it's pretty easy to just not retract is upside-down at weird angles but also disappointing if you can't reliably.

If I were to use a lanyard at all it'd be a loop for securing the knife to my wrist so I can't drop it, and that would be twice as bad at not getting caught on something. I don't usually use my knives or multitools in situations where dropping them would be more than a mild annoyance so no lanyard for me.

I have big hands and still love my para3. Para2 is simply too large to EDC unless you are p rural. Living anywhere where there are more people per acre than cows, you don't need a larger daily folder than Para2 and even that is pushing it.
What are you cutting that you need a full 4-finger purchase? Opening Amazon boxes? Cutting tags off of new clothes? Sheesh.

NTA but I find the pinky enhances fine control/precision over the blade compared to what you can do with three fingers. Torque is not the full story.

I don't see a purpose for it really, but if I got a Sebenza I would trust Chris Reeve's judgment. It helps extract.

You might want to drop it if you trip on something.

My guess is big hands fit the millie well, are too big for pm2 in hammer grip, but you can kind of palm the para 3.

>Small handed men should NOT be allowed to review knives.
every reviewer has small hands. When they wear "large size gloves" even, they are embellishing. gotta look at a size comparison or break out a ruler. You can get the specs and measure a pic of it out to life size on your computer screen.

That's why you carry a little knife too, not to scare people, but you still have a big one just in case.
