Id say theyd still do the job they were designed for well enough, its just not relevant because any criminal or insurgent who is electing to wear body armor isn't just going to wear a soviet-era flak jacket, he going to wear plates.

9x39mm has the power and trajectory of .45 ACP and the rifle has a shorter barrel than a fullsize 1911 before porting. it's also >2MOA with its "sniper" ammo, double that with AP. the AP ammo can't go through even a basic LVL 3 plate. the whole gun is rated only for 1500 shots total and runs very dirty, with typical poor russian rust protection and corrosive ammo, requiring constant meticulous cleaning.

it's basically a different take on the MP5SD with the added ability to punch through helmets.

>Does the concept of a silent "assault rifle" or a silent "sniper" work as it is intended?
It was made for a very specific use-case of having a weapon for fighting against insurgency in Chechnya. Where using a regular AK sucked dick, even if it was equipped with a suppressor and some optics. And using AKS-74u was even worse. Outside of that it's not something good.

It's a specialty gun for basically police/counter-terrorist work, and its niche is "suppressed subsonic ammo, but can punch through soft armor and some early Russian plates".
In a peer conflict it's distinctly inferior to a regular AK.

It's not an MP5-style charging handle, which actually has a decent amount of surface area for you to grip - it's a vz. 61 Skorpion one, where it's two charging "nubs" that you have to grip and pull back, which is pretty shit ergonomically
It was only done on the original SR-3 (and the Skorpion) to make it as slim as possible, so it could be carried concealed under clothing (or in a holster in the Skorpion's case) and you don't have anything sticking out and potentially snagging when you pull it out. Same reason for switching from the side-folding stock to a top-folding one, which doesn't double the width of the gun when folded up.

For the SR-3M, they were moving away from this concept (and desu, even as small as it is, it still seems of dubious utility to carry it concealed, although it'd look pretty cool to have something like the famous Reagan assassination attempt photo but with a guy whipping out one of these from underneath his coat), and more towards just an AS Val without the suppressor - so they essentially just reverted a bunch of the changes and went back to the regular Val features

We have daily threads from niche caliber nerds that would dispute this notion, and even among them there's isn't consensus over what is the best.
.300 BLK and subsonic 7.62x39 aren't perfection, they're the good enough solution that requires the least adjustment and lowest cost for either military logistics or the civilian market.

A 300 BO with a suppressor fills the role of close range urban sniper pretty well. These guns were not intended for open warfare but limited engagements where you didn't want a lot of noise or overpenetration.

It works better than it was intended to.
>Meant to dink through a PASGT
>Modern projectile beats III plates while remaining subsonic

>Meant for single shot precision
>Recoil so smooth and barrel is so short, you can snipe by firing bursts, and PDWs in the caliber are small and deadly.

>Meant for sneaky takedowns
>No report, no muzzle flash, and full auto with little recoil, compact size, you can seamlessly go from taking out defenders on approach to clearing rooms.

They just need to update the suppressor to 21st century and de-gas the design a bit.

It's a cool looking and original gun, pretty innovative at its time (event though the MP5SD already existed by then).

Other than that, it's hard to say how effective it was at its role considering how specific its use was, and I guess only Russian operators or weapons specialists could tell us how it really performed on the field.

Of course, nowadays any .300BLK suppressed SBR surpasses it by a longshot.

.300 Blackout wasn't invented, it's a copy of the .300 Whisper (.221 Fireball necked up to .30 cal).
And it certainly isn't the final end all, be all of subsonic cartridges. Since they are all limited by velocity, they scale with mass and so you end up with stuff like .338 Whisper (also copied, resulting in 8.6 BLK), 9x39, .510 Whisper and 12.7x55.
