try an AR-15, an M1 Carbine or a 10/22, anything light shooting that's semi auto is fun.

start with a 22lr and work your way up
this is assuming already that the range is giving you safe handling instructions first

please know all the safety rules (finger off trigger, safety on when not shooting, treat all weapons as loaded even if unloaded, never point at a person etc). Don't ever cross the shooting line. Don't wave the gun around like a toy. Don't try to do fancy CoD shit.

ooo like start with one of those American Revolution ball shooting musket lookin guns? that's a pretty good idea, i'll check if they have something like that

also going with a friend who apparently goes often, i'll defer to him a bunch i guess but i do like the idea of going through the years, maybe finish with an alien laser zapping gun

Someone else said know the safety rules and I will say that again: know the safety rules. I'm just saying this even if you know it already because repetition is good and will be better for you.

Are you going to an indoor or outdoor range? There are little things first-time shooters might not know. Things to just be mentally aware of. Look at the red line on the floor in this photo, the range will probably have something like that.

If the range is "cold," don't cross that line. Never ever. If it's "hot," then people are shooting and you can cross the line and also shoot. It's more common at outdoor ranges for the range officers to call the range cold/hot because people physically walk out onto the range to set up their targets rather than having an automatic pulley system.

Try to keep your gun facing towards the target even when it's sitting on the table. So when you pull your gun out and set it on the table, keep the barrel aiming in the same direction as the target. Keep the slide locked open and facing up and with the magazine out, so when the range officer walks by and peeks over your shoulder, he sees that it's unloaded when it's just sitting there.

This sounds simple but these are good habits to pick up.

To visualize it. When your gun is resting on the table, it should look like this. Barrel aimed in the same direction as the range, slide open facing up, no magazine in the gun. Get in this habit.

understood, is there a button on the gun that makes the magazine come out? and then i pull back the top and it'll look like that

or just let me know the process of getting a gun to look like that and the order in which to do things

look man, first time i went to the range i made a fool out of myself because i was all "i got this, i've played enough vidya and watched enough guntubers to know how a gun works!", then realized i had no fucking clue what to do, had the safety officer on my ass all day

Yeah exactly. Push butan. Eject magazine. Pull the slide back.

There should be a magazine release button. And the slide will lock back automatically after you finish shooting the last round in the mag too. When you prepare to fire, you pick up the gun, load a magazine, then lock the slide (there's either a button for this, or you pull the slide back a little more and let go, you've seen this in videos, which will insert a round from the mag into the chamber. Then switch off the safety. Now the gun is hot.). It depends on the gun too. I think the mag release button should be on the other side of that Glock so you can't see it in that pic. If your friend is experienced he could run through some function drills with you.

BTW, advice from my friend that helped me the first time was also something simple and stupid, but it's true: when you're shooting, have a good / firm / steady stance and raise the sights up to your eye level. This sounds obvious, but if you see the woman in the first pic, she is somewhat nervous (this is normal), like she's thinking the gun is just going to explode in her hand. It's like the gun is in control of her, rather than her being in control of the gun. This is because guns are scary and can kill people and make a loud bang. Newbies will do things like hold the gun like that, and then try to bend down to look through the sights, rather than feeling in control of the gun and raising it up to their eye level (like the guy in the bottom pic).

the AR15 i shot had almost no recoil; more impactful is the concussion form firing in an enclosed space but the weapon itself is perfectly controllable as long as you hold it tight

btw get a gun your size! i shot a mk18 (short ar15) and it was pretty uncomfortable since im very tall and the gun is small, that and the scope (aside from not even being zeroed lol) was too low for me, had to twist my neck all weird to see through it. I should have asked for something better suited for my height

no lmao you'll have no idea how to shoot those and they wont be renting them out, they're even more difficult than most modern guns

this
small guns for short stature, big guns for big stature
beware of the recoil small guns have though

this
it wont always recoil much but you can feel the shots reverberate through your body
and once you try shooting and think its a lot, try going to a reenactment and standing next to a cannon shooting off a whole pound of gunpowder
