I made a thread in here a while ago about how french engineering in general sucked because the french revolution killed off all the wealthy intelligent engineers but i mean to speak specifically to weapons engineers. Do french guns suck today because of that?

Because french guns and weaponry up until the french revolution were some of the best in the world. But if you look at the past 100 years, french weapons have sucked compared to german weapons, especially in ww1 and ww2.

The old saying "The French copy no one, and no one copies the French" is kinda true. That being said. Most of their guns, while quirky in a way only the French can do, aren't bad guns.

And a lot of French wierdness comes down to 8mm Lebel. It's the first smokeless powder cartridge to be adopted by any country. When it was adopted, it was amazing. But the French wouldn't let it go. The aggressive bottlenecking and rimmed case forced gun designers into wierd designs. The Chauchat magazine is the way it is because 8mm Lebel is about the worst cartridge imaginable for magazine feeding past about 5 rounds.

Never change horses mid race. Only thing worse than 8mm Lebel was trying to phase it out in 1916.

Jesus, the intelligence was right about the soon-to-come propaganda and demoralization operation against France. Not only this board or obviously /pol/ or /v/, but even on fucking /biz/ of all places I see France being brought up and shat on for no reason, even though you could barely see it mentioned on that board before. And why would it be.
Can't you ziggers be more subtle, Jesus.

French guns were good. The problem with France's military was always the leadership/officers.
