Instead of buying A29s or crop duster, why the US can't produce a new P-51 variant with new composite materials and avionics? Also new engine.
This beauty would mop the floor of A29s or another similar aircraft.

A29 can carry 4000 lbs of fuel or ordinance, the P51 2000 lb, despite this the A29 is only a fraction slower than the P51 and about as maneuverable. It is like 2 P51s fitted for ground attack for the price of 1.

This is already 80% of the design. By that stage you have a totally new plane.

The problem was even if it worked really well, it just wasn't an attractive product. Fellow PAVE COIN/Project little brother aircraft the Fairchild AU-23A and Helio AU-24 were actually procured, at least in small numbers.
In it's final form the PA-48 was hardly even a mustang anymore, being something around 90-95% an original aircraft.
The whole thing only lived as long as it did because the guy lobbied hard for it but neither the USAF or any foreign buyers bit on the likely now quite expensive finished product

The Mustang was very vulnerable to a single rifle shot from beneath. It's oil cooler was easy to see and hit from the ground. If struck, oil would quickly deplete and the engine seize up. P-51 was a lovely fighter and strafer of hapless unarmed civilians but it was a lousy ground attack aircraft in contested environments.

It is nice looking.
Here's it's predecessor. They actually sold some of these because it was just a cheap somewhat souped up surplus mustang that first flew in 1958 instead of an expensive turboprop mustang of theseus that saw it's first flight in 1971

Because the P51 is a dogfigther.
And there is no need for a prop figther.

Instead, they should upgrade this.
Make it larger, add a bigger engine.
More payload, more armor, more guns.

cheap, lots of range, sips gas, STOL, proven infinitely adaptable platform for AWACs, ASW, etc. Space for several crew in weird positions (IIRC the torpedo bomber guy was in back looking through open bomb bay doors).

Battle tested up the ass against small arms AAA. Even a tard like young Bush the 1st can ditch on in open ocean without injury. Has engaged possible UFOs in Bermuda Triangle.

Wings fold for easy transport/storage. You can park inside a regular truck garage to work on it.

Nice big versatile bomb bay, plus wing hard points, plus wing guns.....

plus top turret, plus ass mounted MG position to fire cumming and going.
