The Chief of Staff of the Air Force (Kasau) recently conducted a visit of the Italian firm Leonardo in order to talk about the possible acquisition of the armed variant of the M-346 jet trainer.

More and more countries are opting to purchase light fighter attack platforms which were once deemed obsolete, do you think this is a strategy meant to create cheap anti drone platforms?

Aircraft aren't great for taking mass numbers of drones out. They're just not cost effective.
Althoughโ„ข maybe a fleet of patrol boats fitted with a bunch of Rheinmetall Oerlikon Mk3/Skynex anti-aircraft guns would make sense.
Indonesia doesn't really have any geopolitical enemies unless China wants to act stupid. .

They can be, the US is testing F-16s with laser guided LAU-131 A/A rocket pods for APKWS II. Use a Light Fighter jet trainer as the platform and the costs go even lower.
Realistically this shouldn't be the only solution, but just one part of a broader system which has both fixed anti air, jets and missiles.

He was most likely making a joke considering the 346 already has plenty of T/W ratio. An actual fighter would be a frontline fighter like the Eurofighter or the F-35.
The M-346FA is an LCA.
Depending on the nation's wealth it can become their "frontline" fighter but it's not optimal. Austria bought the FA version as well to offload some of the air policing job from their Eurofighters.

This is wrong and retarded, combat in both the Middle East and Ukraine shows that they're the most reliable, low cost shahed swatters. AAA may be potentially cheaper in the terminal phase, but by then you're risking your force being saturated and more have a chance to hit their targets.

is there a reason the US hasn't dropped the following for F-22s and these or the Textron Scorpion?
>F-15
>F-16
>F-18
all of these planes are old as shit and it would probably be cheaper to just drop them and build a ton of F-22s to achieve economies of scale. Then we'd have F-35s for the fancy shit, F-22s for bulk defense multirole and a smaller plane for ISR/CAS that's cheaper to run for dealing with low-tech countries

>the poles have been left in limbo with theirs.
The FA-50 deal with poland has been a joke, but poles are kinda notorious for being braindead retarded when it comes to military procurements.
When they ordered our M-346 they specifically ordered the most basic version, with no radar and no link 16. The M-346 could simulate fully those internally so it's not an issue, but if you needed the system to simulate other non standard armaments you needed to put it into the package so that Leonardo could put them into the program (at a cost since they are outside the normal stuff). They knew this but still tried to pull the "kurwa! you tricked of me, now you give me free plane!" and we ended up doing the upgrading for free. And after that they bought 4 more M-346 (they tried to pull another trick but I can't explain it since it never became public).
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole fa-50 fiasco was the fault of the poles in the first place.
