Most of them probably don't even have airborne training any more. They haven't had enough working planes to practice that much for ages, and their properly trained people are likely casualties by now.
Helicopter ops are also pretty hard in the current environment, so they're more like some kind of very light mechanized infantry force that drives around in aluminum cans that can probably be penned by an assault rifle at short range.

The key to their continuing demand is probably that like Naval Infantry units, the VDV are not tied to any specific military district, so there's way less organizational fuckery and stepping on toes involved in moving them to another front.
Which might be the reason they keep getting sent to plug holes in the lines and salvage whatever shitshow is starting somewhere.
